This week’s question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Shannon Clark. You can find her on the web at www.shannonleslieclark.com.
Thanks for doing these personal access questions! I’m an energy healer and intuitive counselor in Orange County, California. I’ve been working on my business for about 2 years now with intermittent success. I’ve worked with coaches to focus on my target clients and improve my marketing. I want to help people find their dreams, get past their blocks and live amazing lives. I’ve been working with Twitter which is creating interest in my site but very few sign up so far. Right now I’m struggling to keep my dream alive and pay the bills! I know I’m meant to do this I just haven’t figured out the key to attracting people consistently.
Thanks very much!
Hi Shannon, and thanks so much for asking this question…
Here’s your problem:
There is a difference between marketing and sales. Based on your question, it’s clear to me that you believe the reason your business is not as financially successful as you’d like it to be is because of your marketing. That is simply just not true.
Improving your marketing, focusing on your target market, and working with Twitter does not DIRECTLY bring money into your business. It’s simply a way for you to hide from selling yourself.
Now, please don’t misunderstand. Marketing has its place, and can really make a difference in the success of a business, but if your area of greatest need is cash flow so that you can pay your bills, you should be focusing on increasing the conversion of your sales rather than working on your marketing.
When entrepreneurs first begin a business, THE MOST IMPORTANT skill they can learn is how to speak to others about what they do. That means, talking to people in the grocery line, at your children’s soccer games, or while waiting in the security line at the airport. It means feeling confident enough in your ability to help people that you will talk to anyone who will listen.
The problem that I often see is that some entrepreneurs, especially in the healing arts, have a VERY difficult time selling themselves and charging what they are worth. They have no problem giving away their services, until their line of credit has run out, or they can’t afford to put food on the table.
Ask yourself, how do you feel about ASKING for payment for your services? Are you intentionally shying away from having sales conversations, and creating busy work for yourself in the hopes that money will magically appear in your bank account?
Like I’ve said before, money does not come FROM people. It comes THROUGH people. And if you’re not asking for it, you’re blocking the flow.
Notice the emotions you feel when you’re having a sales conversation with someone. Are you comfortable and confident, or do you feel yourself shying away from asking because you don’t want to feel rejected?
You attract people from who you are BEING, not what you are DOING.
So, Shannon (and everyone else who can relate to this), WHO ARE YOU BEING? Are you being confident, powerful, and spirit-led?
If you truly want to help people find their dreams like you stated in your question, than you have to call them and tell them you can help.
And trust me, they are waiting for you to call…
