Are you perpetually distracted?

This week’s question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Scott Garver. You can find him on the web at www.scottgarlaw.com

Question:

What daily rituals do you suggest to stay focused and motivated? There are so many interesting distractions on line and elsewhere that I often get lost in a web of nonproductive activity. I then get angry with myself and usually wind up in a state of depression.

Answer:

Hi Scott!

Since I have no interest in simply giving you suggestions that will put a temporary band-aid on the underlying problem, let’s talk about why you’re attracting distraction in the first place.

I see this as a very common problem with entrepreneurs, and even those that coach with me personally.

They wake up in the morning jazzed about the goals they are going to meet for that day. Their mind is full of thoughts about clients they are going to contact, the sales they are going to make, and the planning/marketing ideas they are going to implement.

And then something interesting happens…

They become DISTRACTED.

They begin fumbling through emails, doing laundry, running out for groceries, or “organizing” their office.

You see, distraction is your ego’s way of keeping you EXACTLY where you are. And it provides you an excuse for resisting doing something you’re afraid to do.

Entrepreneurs will cause all manner of distraction and use it as an excuse for not making sales calls, because they are afraid of rejection or what people will think of them. Another reason they attract distraction is to keep them from making decisions that they are afraid to make.

And the most insidious thing about it is that you don’t even consciously realize that’s why you’ve attracted the distraction in the first place.

Here’s what I suggest…

Set a clear goal. This goal should be action, sales or financially oriented.

Each day when you wake up, write down the 6 most important things that to need to be done that day to bring you closer to the goal.

Practice this every day.

It will take discipline, but it’s the most important habit you can develop as it will have a DIRECT impact on the success of your business.

You have to realize that you are not a victim of distraction, you are its creator.

And again, this is why you will hear me say over and over that if you don’t master yourself, you won’t master your business.

Awareness is the first key in being able to identify why you replay this toxic pattern over and over in your life.

The second key is taking action to change those patterns and create new habits.
Scott, I hope you’re joining me in my new program designed that will allow you to recognize these patterns in your life and take action to change them. If not, I recommend that you sign up. www.myyeartobreakfree.com

Oh that is so on the mark. During my morning exercise, I come up with the exciting goals of the day and by mid morning I am distracted and bogged down in less than ideal issues.

What has worked for me in the past is writing down the next days goals the night before. This stops me from taking on new projects, before finishing the current one.

I have done this before, I have coached people on it, yet sometimes we all need a reminder. The exciting goals should go on the “Possibilities” board.

Great comment Brian; thanks for sharing it here. The ego is masterful in getting us “bogged” down with things that distract us from our true goal. Stay focused and see the end result.
