This week’s question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Jill.
Question:
Hi David.
Well, it’s New Year’s resolution time, and I’m getting ready to set my resolutions for my business. The only problem I’m experiencing is that I’m actually very reluctant to set those goals. Every year I do this, and every year, I don’t follow through on my goals. It’s maddening!
Any suggestions?
Answer:
Hi Jill!
What a perfect question…
I would recommend that you set a yearly goal, but because you’ve allowed yourself to NOT hit those goals over and over, you’re going to have to set smaller shorter term goals as well.
Let me explain. Right now, you don’t want to set year-long goals, because you actually don’t trust yourself to do what’s necessary to hit that goal.
You need to strengthen your confidence-in-goal-setting muscle!
Here’s how:
Every night before you go to bed, write down 3 daily goals for the following day. When you wake up, you know exactly what you need to do.
DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO GO TO SLEEP THAT NIGHT UNTIL YOU’VE COMPLETED THOSE 3 TASKS!
You cannot allow yourself to make any excuses or exceptions to this.
Also, it’s important that the 3 tasks you assign yourself each day are taking you closer to your year-long goal and not further away from it.
If you do this over and over again, you’ll find that you’re more confident in your ability to follow through on goals, and also that you’re closer to your year -long goal than you’ve ever been.
Happy goal setting for your most prosperous year yet!

Wow such a great idea!! Kind of like the gratitude journal where you list 3 things you’re grateful for. Easy way to implement the 3 goals with that concept. I always tell my clients whenever they have a decision to make to ask themselves that same question: “Is this bringing me closer to my goal, or further from it?” Thanks.
It’s the best and most efficient way Julie to ensure you are on the right track. Thanks for the post.
David
Your program is very uplifting and my goal this year is to use your weekly insight to get closer to my life goal. I am organizing my thought process using your code as my guiding light .i have a son who will surely need your help but he is so untrusting that nothing works to move him.He is very hardworking , kind and honest but his struggles takes him no where.he works hard only to pay his bills and nothing more.Any attempt I make to advise him he thinks I have a hidden agenda to get him to think seriously of marriage.he is almost 40 but has no plans even to date.hiw can you help ?
Amara, what responsibility do you have to your son? First and foremost you are not responsible for getting him to achieve a certain level of success, that is entirely on him. In fact, when you “advise” him it is only serving to keep him exactly where he is. You need to get focused on what YOU want for the year ahead, which will serve everyone for the better in the long term. What will you do today to make sure this happens?
Thanks! What a wonderful reminder!
You’re welcome Sheila. Thanks for the post and I hope it’s a great start to 2013!
A very simple but effective approach. I am working on my new years goal now and I wont go to bed just yet….
Excellent Prem. What did you come up with for the short term ahead?
When I use this approach, things get done and they get done more easily. When I set my daily goals right before I go to bed it allows my psyche to work on them overnight and the next day these goals are much easier to accomplish. Note: don’t try to do too much too fast. Choose easily accomplished goals at first so that you feed your sense of success then you can move on to bigger ones, because remember – you’re not going to bed until they’re done!!! Then you can set 3 more goals and go to sleep feeling great for having accomplished what you set out to do. It feels sooooo gooood!!!
It sure does Joan. Like I said, this feeds that mental muscle and allows you to bring things into your life more quickly and rapidly than you ever thought possible. Appreciate the post.
Hi David,
Thanks, that is a good strategy. I’ve found myself using that recently without actually thinking of them as goals.
I personally don’t do new years resolutions. If I feel like setting a goal I don’t see the point of waiting until the end of the year.
Thanks for the post Ben. Having the short term goals does seem to be more effective practice than the resolutions idea because you are breaking the year up in benchmarks. Set the goal, achieve it, and move on to the next. It’s all a part of the process.
