Secret 5: Personal Responsibility

Responsibility is the Key to Your Power

Growing up, many of us were taught to blame others for our feelings, problems or the situations in which we found ourselves.

People “made us feel” upset or angry. Our parents blamed each other or the government ~ or us ~ for problems they faced.

They passed on to us the message that we have no power and no responsibility. And that message was communicated over and over in various ways.

Just turn on the news for five minutes and watch blame being leveled at everybody else for every problem.

It’s no wonder that people feel disempowered to do what they need to do.

They don’t realize that they have the power and control right now to put themselves in a situation such that nobody else is responsible for their income, how they feel or the size of their business.

No one is responsible for any of that but you.

In order for you to realize that power, however, you have to take it.

You have to take responsibility for every thought you think, every emotion you feel, every action you take and every result in your life.

If you do that, you will be able to create whatever you want and break free of limits that are holding you back.

No longer will you feel buffeted by what other people say or do. No longer will someone else control your well-being.

Instead, you will hold the keys to your prosperity and happiness firmly in your own hands.

That also means you can’t make excuses or blame others for your problems.

Taking responsibility is not the easiest thing in the world to do. It requires discipline and introspection. But it’s well worth the effort.

What Taking Responsibility Looks Like
Let’s say somebody cuts you off in traffic, and you get angry and curse at them. After you realize you did that, step back and say, “That person did not make me feel this way. I chose to feel this way based on what that person was doing. Why am I doing that? Why am I choosing to feel this way?”

Even if you don’t understand precisely why you responded the way you did, by turning your attention back onto yourself, you’ve taken back your power.

Here’s another example: If you ask most people why their income is not where they want it to be, they’ll talk about the economy or gas prices or somebody who’s competing with them.

They’ll make excuses.

If they want their income to rise, they need to say, “I don’t know why my income is not where I want it to be, but I do know, at some level, I’m creating this. My job now is to accept responsibility for this situation and find out why I’m creating it.”

Do you see how powerful that would be?

They would be taking the reins of their income away from something they can’t control ~ rising gas prices ~ and controlling their income themselves.

Listen, blame is like a blindfold. It prevents you from seeing the truth. Take off the blindfold and the reality of your situation is visible. Now, that reality may not be pleasant, but at least you can then take action to change it.

As long as you’re blaming others, you’re blind; you’ll get nowhere.

Start Today
When I started taking responsibility in this way, I found complete liberation. My relationships improved, my business started to grow rapidly, and I no longer wasted time making excuses, blaming others or caring so much what other people thought.

I took responsibility for all of it and got down to my work.

I’ll give you action steps in a future article, but you can start taking responsibility right now for every thought, emotion, action and result.

Begin with your next thought or emotional reaction, and see what happens.

Keep taking responsibility and it will set you free.

David,

Good article.

Taking responsibility is obviously necessary. The devil’s in the details.

For example, it’s been bugging me that I have the common fear of public speaking. I realize that could boost my practice – but I want to do my thing and be successful _on my own terms_. In fact I insist on it. Therefore, I then become responsible for finding a way to increase my practice other than doing seminars or giving talks. I’m sure that taking that step (speechifying) would be a personal growth experience…but so is finding other ways to accomplish the same goal. I have in fact found some promising alternatives that may be even better – after all, speaking to a few hundred people at a time as a marketing tool seems not very time/cost effective (unless you’re charging big $$$ for the talk,, which my practice doesn’t lend itself to at all).

Anyway, thanks. Good stuff.

Remember Michael, the fear you are experiencing is not real because fear is a lie. Also, be careful when you say “on my own terms” because it sounds as if you have a strong need to be right. It may get you exactly what you currently have, rather than what you ultimately want! Finally, never underestimate the power of a single connection. Thanks for the post.

I understand the concept of taking responsibility for what we think, say, and do, but I question how realistic it is to be able to take responsibility for everything that HAPPENS to us. We can’t be an expert in everything, that’s why we go to other people who are supposed to know more than we do in certain areas. How can we be expected to learn EVERYTHING about everything that may affect us? There is only so much “vetting” that can be done, and even that is no guarantee that the people we are looking to for help will meet our expectations. So, when an outcome is directly impacted by someone else’s work, I have a hard time taking responsibility for that.

I am thinking right now about poor veterinary care my puppy has received from two different vets since we got her. The first incident was she was given a double dose of rabies vaccine, even though I had told the vet she had already been vaccinated, she had her tag on, and I had just given them the paperwork (she was supposed to be getting other vaccines she had not had yet). I realized she was given the wrong thing when questioning the vet tech who gave her the shot to make sure she was getting the right med (I actually asked the vet tech first, but instead of answering me first she started injecting my dog at the same time she answered me). Am I responsible for that? Then a different “holistic” vet gave her a flea medication that interacted w/a medication she was already on for demodecosis. This vet knew about the other meds; I “trusted” the vet due to several recommendations from other people and gave my puppy the flea med in the office before I had time to read through all the package inserts and discovered the potentially lethal interaction. This incident I am more comfortable taking responsibility for b/c I should have refused to give her the med. until I read the whole package insert and not just trusted the vet. But, I have a hard time taking responsibility for the rabies overdose.

Your insight is appreciated!

Chris, responsibility is the only way you can claim the power to change anything in your life. The simple truth about the circumstances, environment and results that you experience is that your in the center of it. You always are and always will be. It’s your life and your experience and in your world there can only be one center an that is you. So to change you have to realize that everything in your world emanates from the center then once you realize that you can change it.

David, All I can say is a great big THANK – YOU!
I have heard it all many times before in the past 20 years and never taken heed! I am 61 years young and all I can san say is I could give you and everyone you have met in life ( a run for their money as they say in Scotland ) in tragedy and ecstacy!

Suffice to say I always knew I was destined for a better life! I just could not figure out why it was not forthcoming inspite of my efforts. I have been very succesful and an unadorned failure in equal amounts. Why? Because my mindset was wrong!

YOU HAVE MADE ME REALISE THIS!

I am going to a breakfast seminar with Bob Proctor in London in mid Octomer, I am in awe at the opportunity of meeting with this legend and would relish the opportunity of meeting with his prodigy at a future …date especially one who advocates The Rhythm
of Life! And!! Knows what that means!!!

David NeagleSeptember 9, 2011 at 6:17 pmReply

You’re welcome Marie! I hope you enjoyed your breakfast with Bob and congratulations on the awareness to change your story and move forward to abundance. Remember, all it takes is a decision.
