Secret 7 Continued: Upgrade Your Physical Environment

Your current intellectual, physical, social and business environments were largely created from beliefs and experiences that no longer fit your goals.
If you’re on a path of growth, you need to upgrade your environment to reflect not where you were, but where you want to go.
Otherwise, as I wrote last time, your old consciousness will draw you back in.
Last time I showed you how to up-level your intellectual environment. Today, we’ll focus on your physical one.
How to Begin Years ago, network marketing trainer John Kalench was describing the ways in which he had transformed his physical environment into something very beautiful. I was inspired, and also realized that I had not yet done the same.
So I took a mental inventory of everything in my environment, asking myself, “If I were the success I want to be, would this be here?”
If not, I got rid of it!
Systematically, I began replacing those items in my environment with things that reflected the success I wanted to experience.
I did this with everything from clothes to furniture to automobiles to the way that I traveled, the friends I hung around with and where I went socially.
If you’re thinking you’d have to replace nearly everything you own, you’re probably right.
Start with your cat-scratched sofa or the ripped coat you’ve had since high school or the car you park down the street so your clients won’t see.
And then keep going. Every time you think, I hate that lamp, or Why do I keep that ugly desk? get rid of it. Just give it away.
Keep up-leveling until everything in your environment reflects the richness you are within.
Embrace the Challenge Treat yourself as first class as you possibly can.
If you can’t afford to move into a house with a spectacular view, make the view you do have as nice as it can be.
I love fresh flowers. There’s always something blooming at my home inside and out.
Surrounding yourself with beauty doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but you do need to embrace the challenge. Push yourself as far as you can.
When I started doing this exercise, absolutely everything began to shift.
I started to propel forward very rapidly, because my old consciousness was no longer holding me back.
I stepped up and into the greatness that was my birthright, and everything around me began to reflect that as well.
Start Now Greatness is your birthright, too.
So look around. What’s the first thing you’re going to replace?
Now get up and put it by the door to take it to Goodwill.

I have made many runs to upgrade my environment and found it to be an ongoing process as I find myself wearing the worn clothing and existing in the cluttered rooms.
Why are you choosing to stay in that story Mark? You say that it is an ongoing process, which can be true, because we are always growing. If we are not, then we are dying. However, you have to be fully committed to changing something that does not work or it will continue to show up. Ditch the worn clothing, clean up the cluttered room, and move towards a model that will take you closer to what you want. It takes a firm decision and committed action.
Very interesting and I agree.I dont know while reading (which I did twice)it
somehow struck similarity to Visualisation(Active) and Affirmations in very dynamic state
of actual motions.
Thanks for the comment Suresh. Having these visual reminders around you are important, but taking the steps necessary to fulfill the need is what calls these things to you. It’s the law, and it doesn’t work part time. See yourself where you want to be, and take action to move forward…always!
I love this. I currently walk into my office and am instantly depressed at the poor furniture in there. I am off to declutter and remove what is not beautiful or useful. Very inspired now.
That’s great Vicki! The first step for sure. I appreciate the post.
Many years ago this piece would have resonated with me, but not now or for a long time. My environment inside and out is gorgeous and there is a zen quality in all that surrounds and nurtures me. Nevertheless the economy is what it is. I keep on keepin’ on speaking, writing, teaching, contributing…
Someday may our paths intersect as unleashing greatness has long been one of my core tenets:) Thanks for being you and doing what you do!
Dear Karen,
I notice that you write “nevertheless the economy is what it is. I keep on keepin on” Maybe that’s just where the key to unlocking “the nevertheless situation” lies. Changing the exact words by changing your beliefs and erasing the “nevertheless” word from your mind, life and consciousness!
You seem to be a great person, going great things to help others and I wish you all the best and a happy rich in everyway life!
Happy thoughts from Copenhagen
Noura
Thanks for the post Karen. I’d be curious to hear what actions you have taken to improve your current situation. It sounds as if you are putting yourself out there, but there is one -ing you seem to have forgotten. That of course is SELLing. My business continues to grow by leaps and bounds, as do those off my clients, so using the economy as an excuse just isn’t serving anyone. My suggestion is to really figure out where you are spending your time and how you can move beyond where you are. You provide a service, so bring the passion to each and every opportunity and you will begin to see the results you strive for. As long as you stay committed.
Talk about synchronicity! I just decided today that my rented home needed to reflect who I am becoming and how I want to live. I went through all my rooms in my mind saying “That’s got to go, that can stay. I’m gonna paint those walls in these colours, all curtains must change etc.” and “Must clean out my car, wash and polish it, get new tyres….” Then this evening I opened the email from You David…so thanks for confirming my new direction and you consistinently spot on and encouraging advice.
You’re welcome Sue. Keep on moving forward.
This is a great article. I am printing it out and posting it on my wall!
My question is about clutter, papers, etc…it’s a bit easier to instantly get rid of single objects that are not attractive, but the ugliest thing in my place are the boxes and boxes of accumulated papers, books, etc. that I need to sift through and put away, which will take hours if not days. Any advice for the best way to quickly upgrade this? Should I just get nicer looking boxes to start?
That depends on the contents of the materials Lisa. Depending on the piles, you may look to hire someone to file them for you. If they are full of confidential information, then I’d take the time necessary to organize them. Take an hour in the early AM before your calls or work with clients begins, or do it at the end of your day. Just that little bit of commitment will declutter your room, and inevitably your life.
As I read this, I am looking out at the little lake behind my house and hearing the wild parrots chattering amongst themselves at the birdfeeder. Beauty is so important to the soul for it is a reminder of what our lives can be like – in all areas.
And, having said that, I am also aware of a big pile of clothes in my closet that need to get bagged and delivered to the Salvation Army. Thanks, David, for the reminder to take care of the little things, too.
You’re welcome Anne! It really is those little things that can make all the difference. And now there is one less pile to concern yourself with; good for you!
The Compassionate Conversation Flow Chart (CCFC) is magic. I was doing a number of sales conversations lately and wasn’t getting positive results. I realized that I’ve been veering away from the CCFC. I told myself, on my next call I will just stick to the formula and see what happens…I made the sale! I told myself to just stick to what works. After learning the Compassionate Conversation Flow Chart I went from 0% to 50% closing ratio…that’s 1 person buying for every two people I speak to! I’m so thrilled and know that it will just get better with David’s personal coaching!
The formula works Trissa, because in those conversations you are coming from a place of service rather than from a place of need or want. Continue to hone the skills included in the CCFC and you’ll see those conversions jump even higher.
I love this, David! I resonate with it. Thank you for the push to get it done. I especially love your comment about the fresh flowers — so true!
Thanks for the post Carolyn.
Hi David,
Your article is timely because I am relocating to San Diego from the Boston area to make radical changes in my environment and build my life coaching practice in an environment that nurtures my creativity and success. I agree with you, and believe that environment plays plays a significant role in our success both personally and professionally. When I am close to the ocean I feel inspired and my energy level is high. I have given a number of things to Goodwill to in an effort to simplify and pass along things that I no longer need. This will also give me a fresh start, and the opportunity to recreate the surroundings that support my success. Thanks for reminding me that I am on the right path by upgrading my physical environment.
Love & Light,
John
You’re welcome John. By upgrading your physical environment you are stretching into something bigger. With that stretch comes the results that align with it. Congratulations!
Hi David,
I’m conflicted… So your things are reflection of your success for you?
Are you looking to replace/up-level your former wife as well?
A wife or partner is not a thing. And the purpose of a relationship is to facilitate each other’s growth. In essence you came together to teach each other something. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying before, “Relationships are for a season, a reason or a lifetime.” And it’s really true. Remember, everything in your life is either growing or dying, and this includes your relationships.
Thank you, David for explaining the purpose of relationships. I did not inted to be rude/mean earlier. I wish both your former spouse and you well.
Thank you David,
I agree that your environment needs to reflect who you are becoming. It aligns to being in integrity with everything in your life, thoughts, words, actions, physical environment, relationships, finances, wellbeing and on and on it goes. Forever growing, trimming, reaching, replenishing. I find the more I look to nature for the lessons the more insights I get.
Thank you for your insights which align with this process, in nature nothing outlasts its purpose.
Thank you Jan.
I love this and so much so that I wrote a book about it a few years back called Shotgun Shopping. It’s all about manifesting through the metaphor of eliminating what doesn’t work and bringing into your life, without every going shopping, what is amazing and beautiful.
Thanks for the reminder and I’ll be letting go of an old oriental carpet that no longer suits me so that right one shows up. Of course I won’t shop for it.
Hugs
Sheevaun
I love that Sheevaun. Glad to hear that you are releasing the oriental carpet in lieu of a new one. What’s next?
David,
I was so happy to read this article. You see, as an interior designer, I always teach my clients the importance of designing their home to reflect THEIR personality and lifestyle, not their friend’s or neighbor’s. Our home should be a place of refuge. A place where we feel safe, comfortable, and free to be ourselves. When it’s cluttered, or we find ourselves avoiding certain spaces, we need to look at the underlying reason for this. What is this avoidance and/or clutter costing us? Do we stop entertaining (relationship building) because our kitchen is outdated and we’re embarrassed? Are we constantly late for appointments because we can’t find files or car keys?
Thank you for bringing this topic to the forefront. It’s encouraging to know that others are recognizing the impact our environment has on our lives…besides just being a beautiful space.
Randi
You are welcome Randi. Environment is huge for what we hope to accomplish in this life, and tolerating a space that is not a reflection of where you want to be is simply not an option. Make it your own! I appreciate the post.
Thank you for this post too, David. I was just deciding in the end, after weeks trying to give my home a thorough cleaning and being unable to because I hate that work, that I would hire a lady to come and clean for a couple of hours. I’m on unemployment, but I can afford it because cleaning ladies charge very little here. Now I’ve decided that I will also ask her if she can stay an extra hour and help me throw away papers that I don’t need (another job I can’t stand doing, it gives me a major head-ache every time I try to do it). I had realized today that the reason why I hadn’t hired a lady to come and clean before, even when I had a job and could afford it without problems, was because I felt I didn’t deserve to have a cleaning lady. You know, like, who are YOU to have a cleaning lady, it’s not like you’re a queen or an aristocrat or something!
I think I will also try and manifest a cleaning lady who is on a spiritual path and is open to new ideas, so then she might be willing to learn about abundance mindset with me and one day no longer be a cleaning lady. (Then I suppose I would then have to go out and manifest a new cleaning lady who will also be on a spiritual path and etc. etc. hehe.)
