What If I Can’t Keep Paying My Team Members?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

I’m hitting a new level and I just feel drained. My fear radar is going off.

After meeting with you and Steph, I felt so energized. I hit the ground running. I was like, “Yes!” I got a bunch of stuff done and hired two new employees who just started.

But something got in my head. Now I feel like my energy is drained, and I’m questioning everything. I think it’s fear of having these two new people on the team. I’m responsible to make sure I can pay them. I’m having all these amazing new experiences and new chapters in my life, and I think it’s coming from fear. How do I keep up the momentum?

Neagle Code Answer

If you can’t pay them, you let them go.

Stop worrying about it.

Do you get this stressed out over paying your electric bill? Do you only think about, “How am I going to pay my electric bill? What if I can’t pay my electric bill?”

No, nobody does that.

You know what your problem is—you’re worried about what they’ll think of you.

Who cares what they think about you? It’s only important for you to know what YOU think about you.

Yes, it’s true—you’re responsible for paying someone. You’re making an agreement. You’re saying, “If you do this work, I’ll pay you.” But that’s happening on a week-to-week basis.

Business changes. Sometimes people go out of business. Sometimes people go broke. Jobs change. People sometimes get laid off, quit, or get fired. That’s just the way it is.

All you have do is say, “I will do everything in my power—I will do my very best—to make sure I’m living up to these responsibilities. And if I blow it, I’ll start over.”

That feeling of being drained is normal.

When you worry about something that much, it’s an energetic suck. It takes all the energy out of you.

The reason you were so pumped after working with Steph and me was because we focused on the possibility of what you could do. You were buying into our belief. You were excited about the direction you’re headed in.

…But then you started thinking about what could go wrong. And that’s draining as hell.

Also, when you’re going to a new level, doing new things, and you’re able to pay for new things—that’s an adjustment to have to make mentally.

Most people have to adjust to the fact that they can actually buy the things they were told all their life they could never have. When you have money, you can buy more of those things, and you can have more of them on a regular basis.

Sometimes there are mixed emotions that go along with that.

Just say, “I’m so grateful that I get to live my dream. Everything is going my way. Everything will always go my way. I just need to keep my mind focused on the direction I’m going.”

The fear will always be there. You just need to have gratitude for it, and have gratitude for all these changes.

Kids at School Told Me I Wasn’t Smart

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I always thought I was a confident person in terms of my abilities and my intelligence. After doing your exercise, it became clear that maybe on a subconscious level, I don’t think I’m important or intelligent—and I’m always seeking external validation from others. I get pissed off when someone doesn’t acknowledge my intelligence.

When I was younger, my family always told me I was bright and intelligent. But some kids at school told me I wasn’t smart.

How do I transform my thinking and self-belief so that I believe I am important?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question.

The first thing I’d ask is…whose voice is that in your head that tells you you’re not intelligent or important?

Because it’s not yours.

Where did you hear that as a child?

Usually the voice comes from a parent or someone who raised you. And it can cause us to form beliefs that doesn’t serve us later in life.

If, in fact, it was the other kids at school who insinuated that you’re not intelligent, then ask yourself this question….

“What did I want from them that I didn’t get, that caused this to be so painful for me?”

I don’t think it’s necessarily about the intelligence piece. It’s probably more like acceptance, love, or something. Maybe you wanted them to like you.

See if you can clearly identify what that is.

Once you’re aware of this, look at all the areas of your life where you’ve been trying to get this from other people.

How is it holding you back?

A need to be liked, loved, or accepted can hold you back from doing the things you need to do to reach your goals and move forward.

For example, if you’re in business and you have a need to be liked, admired, or respected by the “cool kids” (or whatever it is for you), you might not say the things you need to say during sales conversations in order to close the sale.

Whatever you’re trying to get from other people, flip it around—how can you give that to yourself, so that you don’t need it from others?

How Far Should I Go When Investing in My Business?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

My question is, how far do you invest in your business before you’re getting the return?—whether it’s doing a coaching program like yours, or even with the people that you hire?

Neagle Code Answer

All the way.

Invest all the way, with everything. Because if you do it half-assed, you won’t get there.

Let me just be a hundred percent transparent. When first I started down the road of working with my mentor, it was a multi six-figure investment. I was working at a job. I did not have my own business. I had to take out another mortgage on my house to pay for it. I maxed out all my credit cards.

The deal I made with my mentor was…I had to go to every event he taught. I had to pay my own way. Back then, that meant riding in the back of the car (hiring a limo driver) or riding in the front of the plane (flying first class).

I had to pay my own way for everything. I wasn’t making any more money at the time. All I was doing was learning. It was an investment in my own education.

When I started my business, it was “everything in at once.” It didn’t matter what I was doing. If I had to hire somebody, or pay for something for myself—every resource went into making this thing work.

Let me say this again: If you do it half-assed, you won’t get there.

Now, I need everybody to understand this. And I say this with total respect. You can only play this way if you’re willing to step up and earn the money. If you’re not willing to make the sales, if you’re not willing to be responsible to earn the money, then don’t do it. Because you’ll get yourself into a world of trouble.

I’m always willing to earn the money that I spend. As a matter of fact, I love to earn money. I love to sell. It’s in our core essence of who we are. It’s part of how we help people. And it’s exciting. It’s a tremendous amount of fun.

Part of this is about knowing who you are, and making a decision that this is the change you’re going to make for your life. It’s one of the greatest changes you can make, because once you break through it, you’ll never run around saying, “Oh, my God, I don’t have any money.” Or, “How am I going to hire somebody?”

Just do it, figure it out, and make it happen.

Invest in your business all the way as long as you’re willing to earn the money you need!.

Why Do I Choke When It’s Crunch-Time?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I seem to be programmed with a lot of negative faith. Many times in my life, when I was very qualified to do something and people were rooting for me, I’d choke at the last minute. It didn’t matter if it was scoring a goal or auditioning. I’d rehearse and really know all my lines or be good at the sport I was playing. Yet when it came to crunch time, I would totally choke over and over again.

It made me feel so destroyed and broken down—because I knew what I was doing, yet I would totally cave emotionally. How do I develop a more positive faith?

Neagle Code Answer

I don’t know that it’s an issue of having a negative faith. Usually, when we talk about negative faith, we’re thinking about fear or an expectation of something consistently going wrong.

When you’re giving too much energy to the outcome of something, that’s called hyper attention. You’re too attached to that outcome from the negative perspective of not wanting it to go wrong. Most people actually have an issue with that.

This is where the idea of “Let go and let God” comes in. You prepare, you do your best—then you let it go and just step into letting it happen.

It’s not about controlling every aspect of what happens. You have to turn it over to your higher consciousness and allow it to operate in that situation. That’s all you have to do.

You can tell yourself, “I’ve prepared as best as I can. I truly did my best in preparing or practicing. And now I’m turning it over to God or the universe.”

When you’re scared to death that you’re not going to get the outcome you’re looking for, you over-prepare or hyper prepare. That causes fear, doubt, and anxiety to invade your mind, which has a negative effect on your ability to perform.

Although it looks positive, it’s actually coming from fear. It’s coming from insecurity. You end up getting the thing you’re attached to the most, which is the insecurity.

I Feel Guilty for Buying Anything

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

Lately, I’ve been struggling with buyer’s remorse on 98% of things I buy.

When COVID hit, I still wasn’t earning anything from my business. My husband and I don’t have problems with money. But for the first time, he was worried about money. I got pregnant, and we considered pulling our daughter from daycare to cut expenses. I became an “extreme coupon” person, and now I have remorse for everything I buy. Even with groceries, I’m like, “Do I really need that?” How can I drop this habit?

Neagle Code Answer

Part of it is, it’s a way for you not to feel guilty about starting a business. You have to look at what your husband’s experience was—and your reaction to his experience in that moment. You created a new habit of asking, “Should I not buy this? Should I not do this?”

It’s kind of like, “Well, I’m going to do it anyway.” It’s a way for you to re-project your guilt in a different direction.

Here’s how you change this.

You change it by raising your standard of how you want to live your life. You never cut things to go down to where your income is. You raise your income to what your standard is, so cutting is no longer an option.

Once you become aware that you can manifest whatever you want, you never cut anything to go lower unless you actually want to go lower.

Let’s say a family wants to downsize. There’s no problem with that. But if you’re doing it because you think you have no control over your income, that’s a problem. You start to go unconscious again. Then you start coming up with alternate behaviors (like extreme coupon cutting).

You need to create a vision and a standard for your marriage, your life, and your finances—and then raise everything up to meet that standard.

That’s where you put your energy. You raise it up.

It’s no longer about questioning whether you need something or not. It’s about saying, “This is the standard I’m living at, and I completely accept that in my life.” Then you don’t have a conflict of interest or a value conflict going on subconsciously.

Once you’ve raised your standard, that’s it. Now your standard has to be higher.

There should be no going back.

This is Why You’re Stuck

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Ok, David… I’ve had the same results for the past 3 years, and now I’m even starting to see a decline. I can’t see what needs to change…but I know working harder is NOT working.

What is going on? I REALLY want a different result!

Neagle Code Answer

Amazing question!!

And the answer is very simple.

You are in resistance.

Resistance pops up when you experience a value conflict.

Let me explain…

If we are resisting something, we're literally pushing the good that we desire away.

It's like we're building a wall in our life, and the Universe is trying to send us the good that we desire, and it can't get to us because we've built this wall.

We call that wall resistance.

Resistance happens when your desire says one thing and your psychological program or your pattern says another.

Remember we are all a product of the people, places and experiences of our youth — and as children, security was incredibly important to us. We avoided doing anything that would jeopardize that security.

And we’ve carried that fear into our adult lives.

You, my friend, have a value conflict that is causing resistance to doing the things necessary to grow your business.

How does this show up?

  • It will show up with a person not wanting to make sales.
  • It'll show up with a person not wanting to create a product or a service that's relevant to what the consumer market needs currently.
  • It'll show up with a person either not hiring help or hiring the wrong kind of help.
  • It’ll show up in a person's attitude about their business and how they see the business world and their place in it.
  • It’ll show up in their lack of confidence in what they do and how they bring their product or service to market.
  • It’ll show up as a financial ceiling in their business.

Is this making sense?

Giving up Control to Scale

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Kathleen.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I have built a very successful company of which I am the only “employee”. My growth is now capped. How do I move beyond the fear of scaling, even if I don’t hire people directly but build a resource team of affiliates instead?

Neagle Code Answer

Here’s the thing…

Many businesses start as an office of one, but not a lot of them grow into full-fledged companies. And that often has to do with the owner’s fear of delegating or outsourcing.

I understand that it can seem scary to give up control.

One day, your success depends on your performance. And on the next, there are all these moving parts that can influence it.

But the truth is…

You’re not letting go of control by outsourcing. You’re directing it based on your instructions and the vision of where you want the business to go.

An entrepreneur should know how to do this. Otherwise, you’ll overwhelm yourself and your own business will become a nightmare. Not to mention that you’re putting a cap on its growth.

At some point, you need to get over yourself and start manifesting the people that your business needs to thrive.

And yes, you can absolutely do this without losing control.

You must understand that you always have full control over your business. And on any given day, you can hire or fire someone. As a business owner, you get to take your company in whichever direction you want.

Think about all the people who would love to work for you. Imagine the growth that you can achieve by having a team of high-performers on your side. The image in your head will go a long way towards helping you combat any fear of outsourcing or scaling.

It all comes down to gaining clarity and making a committed decision to scale.

So, set a date to make your first hire. When you take that first step, all other steps to come will be easier.

In time, you’ll build an outstanding team and unlock your business’ full potential.

Don’t let fear tell you that you aren’t enough.

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Julie.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I’m always worried that I’m not doing enough, learning enough, or taking enough action. How do I stop these self-sabotaging thoughts?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question.

This sounds like a voice of “I'm not enough” that's creeping up for you.

You need to just ignore that voice, and repeat (out loud and over and over):

“I'm enough. I'm enough”.

Then the first step in setting a goal is to determine what needs to be done to achieve the goal.

There are things that we know we need to do… and then there are things that we don't know that we need to do.  As we move toward the goal, we’ll get clearer on EVERYTHING that needs to be done.

It might be required that we learn a new skill or improve upon a strategy we’ve tried in the past.

But the key is to let the goal drive your decision-making process, not the voice in your mind.

If the goal requires you to do more, than do more.

If the goal requires you to learn more, than learn more.

Do only what needs to be done today the best that you possibly can.

Stay present and let the goal dictate your activity.

Why you don’t need to work 24/7 for success

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I would consider myself a hard worker…do I need to work 24/7 in order to experience the success I want?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question.

I firmly believe that we get to create our life exactly how we want it to be. If we're not enjoying it, it's our own fault.

There is absolutely no reason to work 24 hours a day 7 days a week, but what you do need to do is make sure when you ARE working, you're 100% focused on the enjoyment of the process of your work because that will make all the difference in the world.

Why do you have this intense pressure to get to this certain point in your business?

Is it fear driven or desire driven.

My guess is that it’s fear driven.

And here is the truth…

There's nothing that magically changes when you hit a goal because you still have to keep growing. It's not like, “Oh, I got there,” and everything changes. It doesn't. The only thing that changes is the knowledge of your ability to do what needs to be done.

Most people look at success as a destination, and they want to “just get there”…but success is a journey that never stops.

In my mind, you might as well enjoy the hell out of the journey!

Fear Stopping You From Action?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Sariah.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I have a clear vision of what I want. I feel like I'm pretty clear on what my purpose is, but I struggle with some of those actions that I know I need to take in order to move my business forward (like in sales, making cold calls and networking). How do I overcome my struggle with following through with action?

Neagle Code Answer

The desire needs to be there, because if it's there, that will be the thing that causes you to overcome whatever resistance there is around the action. If the desire is not there, then the fear will always be stronger than whatever it is that we're saying the desire is.

What do you really want? What is your desire?

You have to ask yourself, are your ideas rooted in you being the best? Or are they rooted in everybody just doing okay, like being safe, being secure and motoring along at that pace?

If you really wanted to be your best you would be thinking, “How do I crush sales? How do I crush it? How do I master this damn thing so I'm the best.” You wouldn't say I'm struggling with it.

So, when I hear somebody use that language, I'm asking myself what is the real motive for what they're saying that they want. And usually a person's not clear on it.

They're not; they may think they're working to be the best, but they're actually working for some different level of safety or certainty in their life.

Because you have to understand something, the fact that you're struggling represents in your mind somehow that there's some uncertainty with that specific task, or that action or how you do it, otherwise you wouldn't be struggling.

If you want to be your best, nobody should be able to expect more from you than you.

Your demand on you should be so much higher.

It should supersede anything anybody else could expect from you, that you don't even care what other people think because your measure of your best is an internal measure.

You need to change what is determining your success and your best because you are doing it in a way where it's being reflected to you by the way others behave or treat you or expect something from you.

It needs to be an internal compass. If you change that one thing, if you just pivot that and really get solid on, you're the best judge of your success and what you're doing, I think these problems will go away.

It's really a practice in becoming very aware of what your own hidden motives in life are. And then getting them the hell out of there and doubling down on what you really, really, really want for yourself and not letting anybody else's opinion, acceptance, or rejection of you matter at all. The only thing that matters is what you think, and you set the bar for what is success in your life. Period.
