Thinking about calling you, makes me faint …

This week’s question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from an individual who wishes to remain anonymous.

Question:

Help David…I’ve recently set some pretty high financial goals for my business this year. The only problem is that every time I get to the “salesy” part of a sales conversation, I have a negative physical reaction. I begin to feel uncomfortable, my stomach tightens, I forget to breathe, and I’ve even caught myself wincing. It’s getting worse, to the point where I’m severely resisting even picking up the phone. What is this about? And how can I overcome it?

Answer:

Hi and thanks so much for your question. The answer is two-fold.

First, really take a look at how YOU feel about sales. Were you raised to believe that salespeople were dishonest, crooks, or only after your money?

Examine how you view sales.

Do you see sales as doing something TO people or doing something FOR people? The truth is that when you make a sale, you are doing something for them; in essence, you are ADDING to their life rather than taking away.

To allow you to see this easier, let’s take money out of the equation.

Every time you recommend a good movie to a friend, you are SELLING them on that movie. When you were young, you sold your parents on your activities and wants. All the spiritual leaders of our world were amazing salespeople. Christ himself was selling salvation and hope.

Our entire world was built upon sales people. Whether they received money for their sale or not is not important.

Second, you must keep in mind that you are having a physical response that is based in fear. What is causing the fear?

Are you afraid of what your potential client is going to think of you? Are you afraid of being judged? Are you afraid of experiencing rejection?

If this is the case, you have not mastered yourself, and therefore you will not master your sales or your business.

What are you protecting by NOT making sales calls? How does it serve you?

You must be willing to look at your underlying need for love, security or self esteem, because that is what is feeling threatened and causing you to shy away from selling.

In order to begin to shift your energy, I encourage you to begin making your sales calls in the following manner:

Before picking up the phone, ask the Universe to show you how you can help the person you will be speaking with. Ask the Universe to show you how you can be of service. This shifts your energy from “getting” to “giving”. Remember you want to add to someone’s life, not take away from it.

I would also recommend that you join my new, year-long, virtual group coaching program, My Year To Break Free. Over the course of the program, I will be providing you with lessons and homework that will assist you in breaking free from this fear. You can sign up by visiting myyeartobreakfree.com. I think you’ll be surprised at how little of an investment you’ll need to make to begin to shift the fear and worry that is keeping you from reaching your financial goals.

Always remember, Spirit doesn’t speak to you through fear. Fear is nothing but a lie manifested from your ego to keep you exactly where you are. You must find the truth under your fear, and that truth will ALWAYS set you free.

Recruiters have to make hundreds of cold calls a week. “Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance” by George W. Dudley & Shannon Goodson is a book that has helped some people overcome the fear of cold calling or selling.

Thanks for the book title Eugenia. We are always looking for information such as this to help us break through any fears we may have around connecting with people in a cold calling fashion. I’m sure the readers of this blog appreciate it, as do I.

Thank you for this David. Shifting from getting to giving is the key that works for me for sure. The key is to know that what we offer is truly valuable, just as we know a good movie when we see one!

I love your reminder that the Universe does NOT speak to us through fear!
Thank You,
~Judy
