Am I addicted to fear?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from an individual who wishes to remain anonymous.

Question:

Hi David! Thanks so much for this Saturday morning kick in the pants…

Here’s my question. Over the last year I have set goals, and for the most part, hit them. However, each time I reach a goal, I feel a new set of fears bearing down on me. I keep thinking that if I could just be successful enough or make enough money, the fears will go away and my life will be easy. Is this accurate thinking or am I a fear addict?

Answer:

Great question and congratulations on your growth and success!

What you’re experiencing is what I like to call “New level, new devil”.

Many people have a common misunderstanding that once they hit a certain point in their business; everything suddenly becomes a bed of roses.

The truth is that every time you change, adapt and grow, you experience fear. It’s a natural part of the process. Remember, your ego sees growth and change as a threat, and therefore creates the illusion of fear to keep you exactly where you are.

As an entrepreneur, you MUST get comfortable being uncomfortable.

So the MOST important thing to remember as you’re going through the terror barrier each time, is that whatever you focus on will grow.

If you give energy to the fear by trying to fight it or figure it out, you will manifest reasons to feel fearful. If you focus on the success, you will manifest opportunities to be successful.

Here’s your cheat sheet on coping with the fear.

When you feel yourself going to that dark place, instead of fighting it, which only gives energy to it, greet it like an old friend, and say, “Thanks fear, it’s nice to know you’ll always be there for me, but today I’m going to focus on something else (love, my successes, what I’m grateful for, etc).”

Pretty soon, the fear will take a back seat, and you’ll get so good at redirecting your thoughts, that the next time you feel the fear bubbling, all you have to do is think, “NEXT!”, and quickly move to a thought steeped in love or gratitude.

1)Fear is a lie.

and

2) Spirit NEVER speaks to you through fear.

When you begin to experience fear, become aware of what it really is.

A lie cannot hold up in the light of the truth.

  1. David,

Thanks for all you give. I truly appreciate the level of knowledge and sharing that you offer.

I would go one further in your advise. I would re-frase “Thanks fear, it’s nice to know you’ll always be there for me, but today I’m going to focus on something else (love, my successes, what I’m grateful for, etc).” to say, “Thanks fear, for helping me notice I’m on the right path, today I’m going to focus on something else (love, my successes, what I’m grateful for, etc).”

I see fear as an excellent flashlight into what I want to focus on and question in my beliefs, in order to grow and find peace. When I address the unquestioned thoughts, my fears, I find what is true for me and I move forward lighter and with more energy. All the energy I give to fear, can then be harnessed towards my happiness.

    Great stuff!!! Thanks again!!!

    • You’re welcome Zelle, thanks for the post. Just remember that fear is a lie; something that our ego creates to distract and paralyze growth. If it does creep in, and for many it is a constant threat, you simply recognize it for what it is worth and move on. It will take practice, but is so freeing when mastered.

  2. Hi David,
This one really spoke to me! I have been stuck in fear the past few years and not able to move forward like I know I am capable of. This piece really made the light go on – I have been putting my attention on trying to figure out how to make it go away, why it is there, and where it comes from. So, of course the more attention I place on it the more it persists!!!

    Thanks for sharing your wisdom

    • Thanks for the post Patty. What are you afraid of? My advice is always to step through that fear (at a place which I like to call the “Terror Barrier”) and see just how easy it is. Your ego is strong and is holding you back because it recognizes you are wanting to move forward. Growth is messy, but so necessary! Step through and let me know how it goes.

  3. Great blog David, thanks. I discovered (the long way!) the practice of thanking my fears, and it changes everything. For me, fears express a need, but don’t have the means to fulfill that need (that’s why they’re so afraid!). So I thank them for expressing the need, and then use mature and true ways of meeting that need, instead of leaving fear to its own devices. Then I seriously feel the fears thanking me as well. 🙂

  4. “Spirit NEVER speaks to you through fear.”

David I love that – thank you. I’m going to write that down near my computer to remember the truth. This reminder will allow me to dissolve the grip of fear and allow Spirit to work through me instead. Simple but powerful.

    • You’re welcome Jules! Just that simple reminder can lead to a major breakthrough. Keep me updated on how it goes and perhaps share what the results of this simple message bring you. I can’t wait!

  5. David, thank you SOOO much for the fantastic advice and wisdom you so generously share. The question and advice struck a nerve for me this time. I was feeling that I was doing something “wrong” in my business when I kept feeling fear with every step I took. After reading your blog, I am reminded that I can relax around the fear, move past it, and even interpret it as part of the process rather than something “wrong.”

    With Gratitude and Appreciation!
    Lynnet

    • Excellent awareness Lynnet. Now just keep moving forward and don’t judge anything associated with the past. Enjoy the journey and know that you are here to do great things. The sooner we realize that fear does not exist; the sooner we can reach our full and limitless potential. I appreciate the post!
