No clients? Blame the dishwasher…

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Erica Johansson. You can find her on the web at http://www.travelblissful.com/

Question:

Hi David,

I read your latest article on making decisions and your words “If you don't change your environment, you're constantly reminded of your old belief system and the things that you created from it ” struck a chord.

Self-development coaches often say it's ALL in one's mind, the external doesn't necessarily matter, so isn't it possible to affect one's current environment just by turning old negative belief patterns into positive ones?

Answer:

Hi Erika!

Fantastic question!

It's true. Everything is in your mind. Your hopes, dreams, fears, doubts, worries and all the programming that you received without the ability to reject it when you were a child are all there.

And you can affect your old environment by turning negative beliefs into positive ones, ONLY if you replace the old pattern with a new one.

Here's an example. Let's say Mary wants to lose weight. She knows she has an unhealthy relationship with food and suffers from cravings. In her mind, she “decides” she's going to do it, she's going to finally take care of herself and drop a few pounds.

Can she be successful doing the same things she was doing before making this decision?

NO.

She has to replace the old patterns with new ones, and then create an environment to support her. If she had brownies on the counter all day and her favorite ice cream in the freezer, she'd have less of a chance of creating a new pattern.

This works the same way with entrepreneurs.

Let's say Amanda knows she needs to make sales calls. She knows she's afraid of what people will think of her and she's worried she'll be rejected. Her current pattern is to do everything in her business OTHER than make sales calls. She cleans the floors, answers emails, does the laundry, and empties the dishwasher during the time she knows she needs to be calling.

Then let's say she decides she's going to do it. She's going to get on the phone and make the calls no matter what.

In order for her to be successful, she must restructure her day, hire a cleaning service so she's not distracted, and create a NEW PATTERN for herself. If she doesn't change her environment, she's highly likely to get sucked back into her old patterns.

She must create her environment around who she WANTS TO BE.

During the changing process the new belief pattern is weak and needs to be strengthened. By putting as many representations of the new pattern around you that you can increases your possibility of success.

  1. This is so true. It is so easy to get distracted with little things. I start doing household chores when avoiding things I don’t feel prepared to tackle. When I notice I am avoiding things, I restructure, make a plan, power through the thing I was avoiding, and feel empowered after. Setting oneself up for success sure makes life easier!

    • Yes Colette! Those distractions are by design to keep you off track. Don’t buy into them and set yourself up to achieve that success. Let go of that control and let me know how it goes.

  2. Great Q & A! Thank you for the insights. It reinforces what I’m already starting to do in my life.

    • You’re welcome Sylvia! The question is, who do YOU want to be? Would love to hear an answer to that question…

  3. A fantastic question from Erica and another fantastic answer from you David. I love reading the Neagle Code each week. We often overlook the importance of changing our environment to support who we want to be. It makes things so much easier to implement the changes when we do so.

    P. S. You’ve made me want to hire a cleaning service now.

    • Thanks for the post Lily. Have you hired that cleaning service yet? All it takes is a decision…

  4. I am wondering when you say make sales calls, do you mean make sales call with warm leads or cold leads? I dread making cold calls because I feel like I am begging for business. Is this normal?

    • I meant making sales calls of any kind Nina, warm or cold. Many people feel this way when making sales calls, but they need to get over it. Why do you dread them so much? Answer this: are your services worth it? If they are, then you come at it from a whole different energy. Remember, sales is something you do FOR someone, not TO them.

Send an email to my lead coach [email protected] and see if you can get on her calendar for a brief conversation. She is brilliant and has worked through what you are currently experiencing. Tell her I sent you and consider it a gift from me to you to help work through this block.

  5. Hey David,

I really like your style! I wanted to share a couple of things that have happened to me that really show how the inner mirrors the outer (which means we can change things on the inside to change the outside, or change things on the outside to prompt the inside to change) …

    1. I’ve noticed that when I start spending money more freely, more money starts coming into my life. For example, last year I decided to finish a remodel even though I wasn’t sure where the money would come from (didn’t want to use my savings, as I was about to quit my day job). I started entering into large construction contracts ON FAITH … and lo and behold, money started pouring into my business. (Of course, this one only works if the person’s belief system is is strong enough to support a “no debt” and “no dipping into savings” policy, which mine is.)

    2. I’ve sometimes gone into several week periods where I do little other than meditation, tapping, and resting. This is a way of “cleansing the mind,” and it has frequently happened that I come out of one of these periods and do a massive cleaning and clutter clearing very spontaneously. I believe this is because the now-much-cleaner mind can no longer tolerate the clutter of the environment (even the hidden corners and cabinets) and feels compelled to bring the external environment into alignment with the internal.

There are many other examples, but to me the moral of the story is for us to do both, work from the inside out and the outside in for the greatest results 🙂

    cheers,
    Erika Awakening

  6. Great timing! My cleaner started today and it’s such a load off my mind – the person I’m becoming with the business I want would just have a cleaner as a matter of course!

Next up, I’m hiring a Virtual Assistant 1-day a week to help me grow and expand my business even more.

I think it’s so important to balance “fake it til you make it” with practical steps.

    Thanks!
    Denise

    • That’s fantastic Denise! The Universe is taking notice that you are letting go of things of a lesser nature to achieve something much, much bigger. Good for you and do keep me posted.

  7. Hi David,

Thanks for your answer! This makes more sense now. And after re-reading your previous article, especially the part copied below, I have realized what I need to do to learn new patterns and create an environment that is fully supporting.

“You have to build a new environment that reflects to you your new life. If you don’t, you’ll be sucked back into the old one.

Only you know what you have to change.

You may have to move. You may have to leave your relationship, your friends or even your country.”

    Thank you!

    • You’re welcome Erica! Remember that you are responsible for creating your new environment and design it as such to reflect the lifestyle you wish to lead. So what changes are you making NOW that reinforce those environmental changes?

  8. Hi David,
I’m thrilled you addressed this, because it is something I’ve studied for years. Your environment is considered your third skin (beyond your actual skin, then your clothing), and just like you can tell a lot about a person’s inner self from their appearance, you can also tell a lot about a person from their home.

Unfortunately, homes don’t change as easily as people do, so by continuing to stay in an environment created by who-you-used-to-be, it often fails to support who-you-wish-to-be, and it’s just so easy to get pulled back into the old routine.

When you wish to improve your life, you MUST address your home environment as well. Even a spring cleaning and a major clutter clearing brings in huge waves of fresh energy.

    • We all love a good purge when it comes to “Spring Cleaning” Marlowe. I totally agree with the energy that comes with removing clutter from your life and appreciate you sharing this with us. Thanks so much!

  9. Hi David,

I totally believe that you must create an environment that supports where you want to be in the future, rather than where you’re at now. Your home and workspace are a direct reflection of what’s happening in your life and your business.

If you work in a cluttered environment and aren’t surrounded by things that inspire and empower you, you will not be as productive as you can be. In fact, you might even remain stuck. I discovered this when I became a certified Feng Shui Consultant many years ago. Many entrepreneurs learn marketing, sales, blogging and all the business skills they can think of but they don’t create an environment for success. Most times this is the missing piece of the puzzle for them to skyrocket their business. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping entrepreneurs create environments using Feng Shui principles that support their goals and their dreams for the lives and their businesses.

Thanks for helping get the message out!
