I can’t wait to touch a hot stove! (Really?)

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Michael Pierich. You can find him on the web at www.healedspirit.com.

Question:

David,

Thanks for the Art of Success Program. It's very good.

Was just re-listening to the section on security in part II where you mention one's failing to take opportunities because we feel we can't afford it.

I know I'm probably missing something here – but I do have past experience of taking part in fairly expensive courses with little or no results. How does one get around that experience? It seems to me that some things get programmed into the subconscious for a good reason – namely, because they're true! It's like touching the hot stove – how many times must one do that before the lesson is learned? I know of no one who kept touching the stove and eventually was able to do it without pain…

Answer:

Hi Michael!

You've actually asked two different questions in your above inquiry, so I'll answer each as it's own separate question.

Your first question was “How do I get around the experience of having spent money on fairly expensive courses with little or no results?”

First, you can't get around the experience. You must take responsibility for it.

You see, you are the center of your reality; you create everything. All the positive experiences and all the negative experiences are your own creation, and you create EVERYTHING for a reason whether you consciously realize it or not.

So the truth is, you didn't experience results from the program you invested in because it served you in some way. Either you stopped doing what you were directed to do because of subconscious fear or you chose the program from a place of lack. In which case the end result was lack.

So, be honest for a moment.

Did you choose that fairly expensive program based solely on your desire to have what the outcome promised and your intuition on knowing that the program was just what you needed? Or was your decision based on a combination of what you believe you could afford and the outcome that was offered?

It makes a difference.

And during the course of the program did you let someone know that you weren't satisfied or that you needed assistance? Did you reach out for help and were you willing to do everything you were directed to do?

Are you using your past experience as an excuse to stop?

Because if you are, it's serving a very definite purpose.

Your second question was, “It seems to me that some things get programmed into the subconscious for a good reason – namely, because they're true! It's like touching the hot stove – how many times must one do that before the lesson is learned?

First, I think it's important to note that the fear of touching a hot stove is not a subconscious fear.

We are all consciously aware that touching a hot stove hurts because we've experienced it and don't really want to experience it again.

Babies and small children don't have the subconscious fear, which is why at some point, they have to experience it to know not to touch it.

We have many fears that keep us from perishing but they are all conscious.

Here is the distinction…

God gave us desires. He's a perfect and loving God, and if he's a perfect and loving God, why would he give us desires and then tell us that we can't have them?

The answer is, he wouldn't. It's not in his nature to do such a thing.

If you have a desire to be, do or have something, that message is from God.

And if you experience obstacles, roadblocks, blind spots, or negative circumstances associated with the journey of being, doing or having your desire, you must understand that those experiences are being created from your subconscious mind's need to keep you from growing. Because it views such growth as a threat.

The difference is in the desire.

I don't know anyone who desires to touch a hot stove on a regular basis, but I know lots of people who desire to make a difference in this world and stop because they are afraid of something that does not exist.

  1. I want to first thank Michael for asking his questions, it provided a great learning moment for me. I too have purchased expensive programs with less than desired outcomes and, David, your answer to Michael made me realize that I entered into those programs from a place of lack and non-belief that I could have the results the program intended. The other ah-ha moment for me is that I’ve been letting my own road blocks get and stay in my way to be, do and have what I desire most because of a fear that other people in my life (past & present) will judge me. If they do judge me what the heck do I care, that’s there thing not mine. Living in my greatness is being true to myself and to what the Universe also desires for me. Thank you!!

    • Exactly Barb. Thanks for the post and congratulations on the awareness you just received. It will certainly serve you better moving forward.

  2. Thanks David! You definitely have a handle on this stuff.

Amusing that this is very much along the lines of counseling that I give my own clients…in areas other than “abundance”. As we all have experienced, it’s often hard to “read” one’s self – and I try to avoid giving advice in areas I have not sufficiently mastered for myself. There are way too many “manifesting coaches” out there who can’t pay their own bills. 🙂

I think perhaps my troubles with those “courses” arose from the degree of “woo-woo” that was employed. I come from a blue-collar, technical engineering background and that is how I learn best. I suppose that’s why your work resonates with me – I’ve worked in 0 degree weather myself with icicles hanging off my beard. 🙂

My question was not as precisely worded as it might have been…but the answer was very helpful nevertheless. Yes, I did learn from those courses – it just wasn’t what I expected to learn. I did resent what I saw at the time as an ill-affordable and unnecessary expenditure. But eventually it provided needed lessons, not the least of which was forgiveness for what I saw as deceptiveness in advertising…and further along, the realization that forgiveness wasn’t what was needed. It’s all Good.

And, we could have a minor debate over the conscious/subconscious thing, LOL. But perhaps something like the old phrase “autonomic” would better apply.

    Thanks again.

    • I’d welcome the debate Michael! Thanks for asking the question and bringing this scenario to our readers. Keep me posted on future developments and if there is anything else I can do to help your growth.

  3. Hi David and thank you your brilliant response.

The distinction of Desire is paramount in this example and the fact that our desires come from a loving and totally giving God is a beautiful Truth. I am thankful I came to realize this in this lifetime. This Truth can change everything!

  4. Great explanation David. I think many people get stuck on the difference between our conscious knowledge and what’s in the subconscious that we are unaware of. Our results are showing us what’s going on inside so we can see what it is we need to change in order to grow. Thanks for this great forum! Sharon

  5. I never thought of my lack of progress despite taking courses as something that served me, but now I think that it has helped keep me ‘safe’. That way I can continue to avoid taking the steps that lead to growth, the steps that are ‘uncomfortable’ to me.
I guess there is no way around that ‘fear’ but to go through.
    thanks…i think
    Chris

    • Absolutely Chris; step through it. Get comfortable being uncomfortable as this is an indicator that you are on the path of growth. I appreciate the post and look forward to hearing more about your journey.

  6. I think the number of people grows who feel cheated and it is sometimes hard to tell why programs don’t work. I thought the twist from “getting around an experience” towards “taking responsibility” was very elegant. Even if a program is overpriced or promises stuff that doesn’t proove to be as easy as it sounds, I am still responsible for falling for it or having inaccurate expectations. I tried to compare it with a musician, who gets himself a Strativari-violin and expects to become a star just by owning it. Won’t work, either, he still has to play 10000 hours at least to become a master.
What I don’t agree on is this: “…you must understand that those experiences are being created from your subconscious mind’s need to keep you from growing. Because it views such growth as a threat.”
I think that the main reason for “challenging experiences” is “to make you strong” and teach you all you need in order to finally become what you want to be. I think the subconscious has no intention to keep anybody from growing. It is a great master and I really don’t like this interpretation that it doesn’t allow us to grow, I think this is a completely absurd perception. If I want to climb Mount Everst, there will be challenges, but the mountain doesn’t put them there because he doesn’t want me to climb up? It just is what it is, a huge mountain. A salmon swimming upstream to spawn faces challenges, but they are not put there because “the subconscious” doesn’t want it to spawn, it just makes sure that only the strongest ones get up there. If I would blame any of the masters out for anything then for putting out the illusion in their material “that it is easy”. I think that has got people into the wrong direction. It can be easy, but it is not always. It also doesn’t matter if an obstacle exists in reality or not. As long as the desire is not strong enough, it will hold us back.
May be it is better this way then.

  7. if i’m to take responsibility for my actions, and I create everything for which I’m responsible; where does ‘the God’ character come in? Are we not using the devise of an quasi outside force to validate the GO(O)D we wish to see in the world?

  8. I’m not sure I understand the difference in these two scenarios… would you mind helping me and explaining further?

“Did you choose that fairly expensive program based solely on your desire to have what the outcome promised and your intuition on knowing that the program was just what you needed? Or was your decision based on a combination of what you believe you could afford and the outcome that was offered?”

    Thank you.

    Barbara

    • I only choose things based on what I want, what I need and where I’m going. Never on cost or price. Thanks for the post Barbara.
