The tug-of-war for your time ends here…

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Martha Brown.

Question:

Hi David,
I am working my day job while I'm building my business. When you got started, how did you structure your time so there is balance among self, family, day job, and building a business?

Answer:

Hi Martha and thanks for your question.

In order for me to properly address this question, I have to bring in the Law of Sacrifice.

The Law of Sacrifice states that you have to let go of something of a lower nature to allow space for something of a higher nature to take it's place.

Let me explain… generally when you're growing, you have to go out of balance to regain balance.

You go out of balance because something has to be sacrificed in order to achieve your goal.

You can't grow your business without giving it the proper amount of attention and time, which means that attention and time has to be sacrificed in the areas of family, job or self. After all, there are only 24 hours in a day.

Once your business is established, you regain balance because you no longer need to split attention between building your business and your job. This allows more time for family and self.

While you're going through a transition, it's essential to create VERY strong boundaries around how you are going to divide your time. Let me give you an example. If you know that you're going t need to take time from your family to build your business in the evenings, you need to be very upfront with your family about your decision. Let them know that while you are working on your business in the evenings, you can not be disturbed, however, when you are spending time with them, they will have your 100% undivided attention.

The truth is there is nothing unhealthy about being out of balance for short periods of time, in fact it's required if you are ever going to grow.

  1. Hi David,
My first time commenting. What a great question from Martha and a perfect answer from you! I have realised that to put in the enrgy my business needs I have had to sacrifice things in my life. Time spent I would normally catch TV, I now read what will help me grow. Admin stuff, I now have someone else doing it for me…that saves so much time and energy. I now do what I love to do and the rest I plan to delegate more and more,

    Eleanor

    • Great Eleanor. How you do anything is how you do everything. I spend much of my time in study; even the TV programming I prefer is correlated to my own growth. Congrats on your energetic awareness.

Thank you for that reminder, it was what i needed to read right now!

I’m starting to increase my levels of fitness again after an injury, and then becoming a bit of a couch-potato, and the early morning starts and takeover of leisure time to do light exercise such as long walks, working my way back up slowly to full capacity, looked a bit intimidating in terms of “balance” – now what you wrote has helped me make sense of this, and I’ll be better able to sacrifice time now, so that later on I can work out more effectively!

    • That’s great Miss C. Continued success in all areas of your life; it always begins with a single step.

  3. Hi David –
What you have said here is certainly true – it is important to remember that if a person is attempting to build a business while they are working at a job that it is definitely important not to sacrifice at the job since it is bringing in the money while the building of the business is occurring and that sacrificing at the job will actually hurt the plan to build that business since any trouble at the job will most likely transfer over to the experiences at the business –

What is more challenging is that I see quite a number of people who have recently retired and who have no motivation to do anything – the feeling of vegetating has overcome some of them and they do not find any interest or know how to create some goal for themselves – I certainly would like to help whether it is a friend or a former classmate – if I only had a good answer I would feel that I was doing something worthwhile to help them –

    • You can help Walter, but not getting sucked into their story. Their ‘vegetating’ has nothing to do with you, it is simply a society-wide norm that they believe in involving working to a specific age, retiring, and fading away. May be for some people, but certainly not for me.

  4. What a great Q & A! Somehow I got the idea that if I want to focus on my success, it cannot be at the expense of the other areas of my life, especially family. The idea of a temporary sacrifice, and clear communication, is very liberating. Thanks David!

  5. It seems to me, though, that getting and maintaining balance is itself exhausting. So you exhaust yourself to get to balance, only to find that keeping balance is a job that consumes your full attention too. I’m not saying this to be a wet blanket, just wondering what to do.

    • It doesn’t have to be Eric, it is all in how you choose to look at it. If you are finding it exhausting then you need to course correct and adjust. For you, I’d start by looking at things that are exhausting or consume you and flip the story. Find the gift in those moments and move through them.

  6. My question is related to the art if success where you say i need to know where i am…where am I? I don’t understand the question. What does where an I entail? In what context? As a result of my lack of understanding another question arises. Is it my ego that is getting in the way of my understanding?
Hope this makes sense. I feel it is an imperative question as you mentioned if I don’t know where I am then how can I be found on the map…

Thank you! I am absolutely thrilled at your sharing in the art of success! Amazing fit for me and I have been sharing it with excitement to my friends. Michelle Clark shared it with me!! She has been a follower of yours for awhile! She is a new friend and she has already had an incredible impact on my life!
    Love and light,
    Kate unger

    • Totally Kate; your ego is on high alert by the sounds of things because it won’t allow you to answer even a simple set of questions. Where are you in your life? Your business? Your relationships? The obvious answer…you’re here!

I appreciate the post and would love to hear more about your breakthroughs, and of course the answers you come up with along the way.
