The Art of Success – Article #2 – One Mental Shift Tripled My Income

One Mental Shift
Tripled My Income

Last week I told you that you can double, triple, or even quadruple your income, and it doesn’t have to take a long time or be difficult.

In fact, one simple mental shift tripled my income.

I was a high school dropout and, at the time, was married with two children and working six-and-a-half days a week, driving a forklift on a dock, to earn about $20,000 a year.

I was so frustrated I wanted to scream. I didn’t like myself or virtually anybody else.

But there was a seed of desire in me—just as there is in everybody—and I began to ask myself what I wanted.

I decided that I wanted a boat, a house, a car, and to earn $40,000 a year. That was it. Those were the only things that I thought I could get.

Then one day, I was in a water-skiing accident that broke my back and almost took my life.

It was an enormous wake-up call for me that one day I could be living my life, and then bang, like flipping a light switch, I could be gone.

As I lay at home recovering, I started asking myself why I was here and what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

I thought that God would reward me with a great opportunity, but nothing changed. About a month after my accident, I was back on the dock, absolutely miserable again.

Then one brutally cold February night in Chicago, about 2:20 a.m., I was still working, and nothing was going right. I was exhausted and at my wit’s end, when a voice inside my head said, “David, change your attitude.” It was so clear it was almost audible.

Could it be that simple? I wondered. Could a small change in my thinking make a big shift in my external results?

I started to play with this idea, and began to study the owner of the company where I worked. This guy had a million-dollar company and a great attitude, and yet we came from the same lower-middle-class background. Not only that, but when he started the business in his garage, he was doing the same job that I was currently doing.

I decided then and there that I would commit to making three attitude adjustments in myself, and practice these for 12 months and see what happens.

Those three changes were:

1. I was going to act as though I loved what I was doing. I hated my job, but since my boss used to do it, I decided that he must have liked it on some level, so I would find a way to like it as well.

2. I would treat people with total respect. This is how he treated everybody, while up to this point I was resentful, bitter and hurt.

3. I would do every job to the best of my ability. The owner had built good business relationships, so I surmised that he must have put a lot of care into his work. At that point, I was not operating by that idea. If something broke, I didn’t care. So I decided to follow his model in this as well.

Because I wanted something different, I was willing to do something different.

Without going back to school or taking any lessons or even reading any books, in less than a year, I was making $60,000.

All I did was shift what was going on inside my head, and my income tripled.

Can the same thing happen for you? Absolutely!

And whether you’re making $20,000 or $500,000 the lesson is the same.

You can have so much more than you can even imagine.

And, as I’ll tell you next week, you ARE so much more than you even know.

3 Steps to More Life

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from A.M. Williams.

Neagle Code Question

Happy New Year David!

I just recently figured out that what I want above everything else is More Life; specifically, happiness, harmony, and wholeness.

Within these three “wants” are all my income, health, relationship, and personal growth/achievement goals.

In your post from Dec 30th, the first step to creating what you want speaks of creating a clear vision.

And your third step speaks of letting go of things that don’t support the new commitment. Doesn’t that come with establishing new habits?

Neagle Code Answer

Hi A.M., and thanks for your question!

I am often asked how a person can follow the philosophy of More Life.

How can we have
more life in our life?

I wrote the 10 steps to turning any desire into a reality last month, but I feel this is a bit different.

More Life is the reality of the Universe; however, it doesn't become our personal reality until we are able to see that it's there for us.

So for you to achieve the goal of More Life, you too need to see that it’s there for you.

This begins with a change in attitude.

I made an attitude change in 1993 that has never failed me yet. I suggest you do the same, because this attitude change will allow you, if you do it every day, to see what you previously couldn't see before.

1. Fall in Love with what you do everyday.

2. Do everything in your life to the best of your current ability.

3. Treat all people with respect.

When you make these three attitude changes (so much so that it becomes who you are) you will see great changes come your way.

You will create a vision for your life, have more opportunity and remove toxic things and people from your surroundings.

Make a practice of changing these three things every day and you will have more life in every way.

Should I stay or should I go? A step-by-step approach to making the decision

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

If a person is not happy in a job choice or position does that mean the person should figure out how to change to become happy in any position, or should the person leave the job/position and find something that makes the person happy with the mindset they currently have?

Neagle Code Answer

Hi, and thanks for your question.

I really love this question, and the answer is a bit step-by-step.

First, the person needs to figure out why they are not happy in their current position.

Is it because they can’t meet their financial goals in that position? Is there a conflict with a co-worker or team member? Are the tasks associated with the position not tasks that the person finds enjoyment in?

Depending on the answer to that first question, that person must decide if they want to stay or go. Chances are if the person is not clear why they are unhappy in their position, they will attract the same situation in their next position.

Remember, every obstacle is an opportunity for growth.

If they decide to go, it’s important that they change their attitude around the job and really look at how they can do their absolute best until the next opportunity is manifested.

Some of you may remember me talking about when I first worked on the loading docks in Chicago making $20,000.00 per year. I couldn’t make the money I wanted, I was miserable, and I had a horrible attitude.

As soon as I changed my attitude and did my best in that position, I became aware of a better opportunity that had been right in front of me the entire time, and that opportunity allowed me to go from $20,000.00 per year to $60,000.00 per year doing something I enjoyed A LOT more.

Changing my attitude was the KEY factor in finding the next opportunity. I was making things so difficult for myself.

I see all sorts of business owners doing the same thing, which is why I’d like to invite you to join me for my free training titled, “Stop Making Things Hard!”. During this training I’ll go into detail about the things we do to make our goals so hard to achieve and how we can overcome this sub-conscious trap.
