Why Can’t I Hang On To Money?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I’ve recently raised my prices and made almost $24,000. People are coming to me and asking to work with me, which is great. However, I’m having an interesting scenario where money’s coming in unexpectedly—and then in the same day, more of it goes out.

Bills are getting paid, and I’m happy to pay them. However, it feels like I’m chasing a dangling carrot. Stuff is coming in one day, only to be gone again the next day. It’s bizarre. I’m feeling anger and resentment about it, and find it hard to be in gratitude. Can you give me some guidance?

Neagle Code Answer

Do this quick little exercise. Hold your breath…and keep holding it. Don’t let it go. Just keep holding it.

Keep holding it…

Keep holding it…

Keep holding it…

If you’re like “David, I can’t do that,” then realize; you can’t do that with money either.

Just like you need to exhale and breathe in again, money needs to be spent (i.e., circulated) and brought back in again. That’s part of its nature.

Money wasn’t meant to come into our bank account and just stay in there. It’s meant to come in, and then go back out. Whether it’s for paying bills, being invested, donated, paying for things…

It’s meant to be in circulation.

The whole reason you bring it in, is so that you can send it back out again. It’s doing what it’s supposed to do. If bills are getting paid, and you’re making the money to pay them, that sounds like a good scenario to me. I’m not seeing a negative here.

My question to you would be: Are you paying yourself first?

This is the biggest mistake I see entrepreneurs make. They pay everyone else first and then resent the fact that there’s nothing left over for them.

This requires discipline.

If you want to generate wealth, I recommend setting aside 10% of your income and only using it toward things that appreciate. Do this religiously and without exception.

Once this becomes a habit you will see how easy it is to make enough to pay yourself AND everyone else.

You’ve got to take responsibility for your own situation.

You have to manage your money, and if you’re not good at it, hire someone to do it for you.

Why bother?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Carla T.

Neagle Code Question

David,

I’ve simply stopped setting goals. I resist even thinking about goals because my pattern is to not follow through. It’s happened so many times, that I think to myself, “Why bother…”

How do I finally break this pattern?

Thanks so much!

Neagle Code Answer

Thanks for the question!

I’m going to skip trying to understand why you’re sabotaging yourself and go right to the solution.

If you’re really committed to changing this, do exactly as I tell you below and sooner rather than later you’ll be on your way to success!

First, start with DAILY goals.

That’s right. We’re not talking about 6 and 12-month goals right now, we’re going to start small and build to strengthen your self-confidence muscle over time.

Tonight before you go to bed, take out your notebook and pen and right down

THREE things you MUST accomplish before
you go to bed tomorrow.

I recommend that these be income generating “things”, but it’s ultimately up to you. Sometimes it’s best to start REALLY small.

When you wake up tomorrow, put that list in front of you, and DO NOT GO TO BED THAT NIGHT until all 3 of those items are completed.

You must be disciplined here…do not allow yourself to make excuses and DO NOT GO TO BED until you’ve checked those three things off your list.

Do the same thing tomorrow night.

Write down three ”things” you need to accomplish the next day, and the next day, don’t go to sleep until all 3 things are accomplished.

Setting these small, yet important, goals are small stair steps to your bigger goal and to developing the discipline, confidence and trust within yourself to succeed in whatever you put your mind to.

Once you master the daily goals, begin setting weekly goals on top of your daily goals!

You’ll gain momentum quickly and break the pattern of not following through.

How to manage time to grow your business

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

My biggest struggle right now is time management. I need at least an extra 4-5 hours in each of my days. I want to spend time on money-making tasks, but there’s just so much to do. How can I manage my time better to grow my business?

Neagle Code Answer

Hi, and thanks for the fantastic question!

This is an issue I’ve addressed in a previous post, so I’m going to pull it forward and share it again!

I learned a long time ago that we can’t manage time…we must manage activities.

You see, work will always fill the time you allot for it. This is why one of the first things I teach my VIP Clients is the fine art of calendaring.

Let me explain… as entrepreneurs, there are so many things that can bombard us on a daily basis. Whether it’s making sales calls, handling client satisfaction, fulfilling orders or programs, marketing planning or dealing with our personal lives, there is ALWAYS something to fill our time.

One of the key strategies to ensuring money-making activities get done is to schedule those activities every day, and STICK TO YOUR SCHEDULE.

Start with calendaring the “non-negotiable” items first. These items can be up-coming travel, presentations, and other activities that are firm.

Next schedule all your money-making activities. These should include sales calls, strategy and launches.

From there schedule everything else.

In doing this you may even come to see that you actually have more time than you need or you may see opportunities to hire people to help you with the things you do not specifically need to be doing.

Once you have your schedule in place, you must discipline yourself to stick to it!

Sometimes this is the most difficult step, and if you find yourself straying from your calendar, take a moment to re-align yourself and course correct.

Don’t even SLEEP until these 6 steps are DONE!

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Robert Smith.

Question:

Help! I'm struggling with distraction. I know what I need to be doing, and yet, so many things pop up each day that keeps me from completing those necessary tasks. Do you have any tried and true ways to deal with this situation?

Answer:

Hi Robert!

I see this as a very common problem with entrepreneurs, and even those that coach with me personally.

They wake up in the morning jazzed about the goals they are going to meet for that day. Their mind is full of thoughts about clients they are going to contact, the sales they are going to make, and the planning/marketing ideas they are going to implement.

And then something interesting happens…

They become DISTRACTED.

They begin fumbling through emails, doing laundry, running out for groceries, or “organizing” their office.

You see, distraction is your ego's way of keeping you EXACTLY where you are. And it provides you an excuse for resisting doing something you're afraid to do.

Entrepreneurs will cause all manner of distraction and use it as an excuse for not making sales calls, because they are afraid of rejection or what people will think of them. Another reason they attract distraction is to keep them from making decisions that they are afraid to make.

And the most insidious thing about it is that you don't even consciously realize that's why you've attracted the distraction in the first place.

Here's what I suggest…

Set a clear goal. This goal could be action, sales or financially oriented.

Each day when you wake up, write down the 6 most important things that need to be done that day to bring you closer to the goal.

Practice this every day.

Refuse to go to sleep at night until every one of those 6 tasks are completed.

It will take discipline, but it's the most important habit you can develop as it will have a DIRECT impact on the success of your business.
