How Can I Make Money if My Email List Isn’t Responding?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

My question is that I’m still not making any money in my business. I’ve fixed my messaging, and upped my branding. People in my industry are starting to notice me. But I don’t know where to get the leads.

I have 250 people on my email list. It’s very disengaged, even though I email frequently. I’ve reached out to every person via direct email. I asked them, “Are you looking to find THIS, or are you looking to do THAT?” I don’t know what the open rate was, because I emailed them individually.

No one is responding. And no one responded to my survey. That’s where I feel stuck. What would you recommend?

Neagle Code Answer

My CEO, Steph Tuss, is the master of this!

She recommends the following tips for re-engaging your email list:

  1. Rather than sending these emails personally, send them through your CRM, so you can track open rates
  2. Resend an email, but don’t send a “this or that” email. They’re all on your list because they’re looking for something specific. Deliver VALUE before asking them do to anything in return.
  3. Fulfill the promise of why they’re on your list to begin with—what are they looking for?
  4. Send out a 9-word email to your list. It doesn’t necessarily have to be nine words, but it’s very simple. It should be a one sentence question. You could send something like, “Are you still interested in [whatever your main thing is]?” And that’s it. Sign off with just your name (no fancy headshot, phone number, email, or anything). They’ll either respond with “yes,” “no,” or they won’t respond at all. If they don’t respond at all, then you can assume the topic of your question is no longer something they are interested in.
  5. Use a good subject line. For a 9-word email, an example subject line is, “Question for you…”
  6. The next time you do a survey to your list, give them an incentive for answering the survey (because no one fills out a survey without experiencing “what’s in it for them”).

Anyone with a service-based business can send out this type of an email, including attorneys, coaches, or other businesses.

The email should not be about you at all. It shouldn’t be what you’re offering. It shouldn’t be anything about you.

It should be one single question:
“Are you still interested in… X?”

That should be the reason that they’re on your list, and following you, to begin with.

At my company, we sometimes send out an email saying, “Are you still interested in growing your business?” Period. (You might have gotten an email like that from us before.)

When they respond, this puts you into a conversation back and forth with the people who are still interested and ready for help.

Clients Keep Cancelling on Me

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Anne.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I committed to doing a certain number of client sessions and sales conversations each day in my business. My issue is, the people whom I’m making appointments with keep canceling at the last minute. This has happened four times. Even someone I’ve worked with for three years cancelled at the last minute—and that’s not her MO at all.

I feel like I’m not keeping my commitments, and I’m sitting with the feelings of disappointment, sadness, being disrespected, and underneath that—betrayal. Is the universe reflecting something back to me? Am I playing a role in causing this? What do I do?

Neagle Code Answer

Okay, so you’re misunderstanding something. When it comes to commitments, you only want to make a commitment on things you have 100% control over.

When you’re making sales calls, committing to conversations, etc., you can only control so much of that. You can’t control what the other person does, or doesn’t do.

If this is a major issue where people are continually not keeping the appointment—now you have to go back and reevaluate—who are you marketing to? How are you getting those people in the door? Because that might need to be changed.

You’re doing a great job with your commitments. It’s not that you’re NOT meeting them.

Recognize where an adjustment needs to happen, so that you’re bringing in the right people who will keep the commitment.

As far as reflecting on your own feeling of betrayal—just go back to gratitude and awareness. Don’t take it personally. Don’t ever take anyone’s behavior personally.  If anything, they’re betraying themselves. They’re not keeping their own commitment. That should change things real quick.

Let’s say a person doesn’t keep the commitment. And then maybe a couple days later, another person doesn’t keep the commitment. All of a sudden you start focusing on that and start manifesting more of it.

Well, it wasn’t really a “pattern” before. You’re just over-focusing on it. That’s where you have to double down on using your vocabulary and words in the direction you want to go in.

Instead of repeating in your mind, “People aren’t keeping their commitments”— start telling yourself, “People ARE keeping their commitments on a regular basis, and I’m talking to people every day”… or whatever it is that you need to say to yourself.

How to Stay in The Flow

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Susan.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

Sometimes, I’m in a flow when it comes to sales. But other times, I’m not. I want to start my own business and it feels like my subconscious programming is keeping me from going out and talking to people.

What do I do?

Neagle Code Answer

Here’s a major problem that I see in many people…

When they’re selling for others, they’re absolute superstars. But as soon as they want to start their own business, their sales prowess goes away.

Suddenly, they become timid and fearful. And they have no idea why that happens.

Allow me to explain why.

When you’re selling for someone else, rejection doesn’t feel personal.

You think:

“Well, they just don’t want the company that I’m working for.”

But when it’s your company, things get a lot more personal.

All of a sudden, rejection makes you feel like you’re not worthy of making sales or running a business.

Luckily, there’s a way to overcome this thinking – and a very simple way at that.

All you have to do is shift your focus.

The focus of sales isn’t to make money – it’s to help people.

Selling isn’t something that you do to someone, but for them.

When making a sale, what you’re really doing is helping someone arrive at a decision that will make their life better in some way.

Your job isn’t to convince someone to say “yes”. Instead, it’s to guide someone’s decision-making towards either a “yes” or a “no”.

When you understand this, sales becomes a numbers game. Your goal from that point on is to find those who need what you have to offer, not change the mind of those who don’t.

This is how you become a true sales rock star who’s passionate about what you’re selling. You become inspired by what your product or service can do for others and how it can better their life.

The moment you adopt this approach, sales will become effortless.

Looking Back or Forward

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Adam.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

A couple of months ago, we executed some pretty bold moves and made some hires that we couldn’t really afford. We did it because we knew that it was the team that we needed to reach our goals.

As we’re now nearing these goals, I’m wondering whether I should stay focused on them. Or should I look backwards and figure out what caused the initial inadequate results?

Neagle Code Answer

The only time looking back makes sense is when you need to change what you’re doing.

It’s always a good idea to know your metrics and take a look at them. This way, you can see what’s not working and make the changes necessary to move forward.

What you never want to do is get caught up in regret and doubt over your initial decision.

As for everything else, you must look forward and shift your emotional center. You need to change your vibration enough to move to a different level of awareness.

What does this mean specifically?

You’ve hired your team and now you must make the money necessary to keep it. In this case, it’s got to become a must for you, rather than something you hope will happen.

Your thinking must change to address this. There’s no room for guesswork here – just a clear “must.”

Napoleon Hill talks about this in Think and Grow Rich.

When you make this shift, you get introduced to your other self. This is the side of you that’s capable of so much more and being more effective than you ever thought possible.

To reach this person, you need to make a decision. Again, it needs to become a must, not should.

So, yes, you should look back if what you see will help you move forward.

But remember to make that shift into what must be. That’s when you’ll see what you’re truly capable of.

How to Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind to Get What You Want

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Chris.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

How can I speak in terms of what I want in a way that my subconscious mind won’t reject what I’m talking about?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question.

There is no way to stop your subconscious mind from rejecting what you're saying until you reestablish a full, thorough pattern of thought, emotion, physical action, and result.

The first thing is to make a decision based on the understanding that that voice is not going to shut off right away.

The idea is that:

  1. You don't judge the voice, and
  2. You just let it be there.

Let it be and move forward.

That negative voice that tries to reject what you want is going to be there for some time.

Your job is to make the decision that you’re not going to listen to it.

Instead make the decision that you will not be denied your success and ONLY speak what you desire in life.

That's your choice. Your choice is to speak only what you desire in life.

For example: say to yourself, “The sales are coming in every day.”

AND…

When those rejecting voices get loud, get up and stomp your feet, and clap your hands, and scream at the top of your lungs, “The sales are here now, the people are here now”.

It is important to use your emotion to work on changing the vibration, and then immediately get on the phone and start making calls.

If you consistently make sales, you do the last little piece that helps change that voice in your subconscious because it can't argue with a different result.

Consistently follow these tips to reestablish your pattern of thought, emotion, physical action, and result, and soon, you rewire your brain …and that's when the rejecting voice will stop!

How to overcome procrastination, disorder, and clutter

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Sally.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

How can I overcome procrastination, disorder, and clutter?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question.

What you give your energy to, will grow.

So, if you're focused on what you don't want or what you don't want to happen, like the procrastination, clutter and disorganization, you will notice that you will create more of the same.

The way to handle and overcome this is by first becoming aware that your thinking is causing the problem.

Procrastination, disorder, and clutter are actually caused by incorrect thinking.

Second, it's more than just making a decision to get things done, because the disorder that you experience in your physical world is a result of the disorder that's going on in the way that you think.

In other words, you have to retrain yourself to think in an orderly way, which will then bring you a sense of calm because you're not worried about constantly being disorderly.

Understand that everything happens by cause and effect, but if you’re willing to step into being the cause, the effect will take care of itself.

It takes time. You have to really work on yourself to be able overcome procrastination, disorder, and clutter, but it can be done!

A Rough Few Days

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

I’ve been having a rough few days. I feel like everything in our firm is broken. My employees aren’t doing a good job. Our technology isn’t working. We’re not collecting money. I’m finding fault in everything, and it’s discouraging to me. I can’t even think of one positive thing to try and break out of this.

It really hit home when you were teaching on the need to focus on the vision and not the problems. I made a list of broken things that I need to fix. But maybe I’m phrasing it the wrong way. Can you help me?

Neagle Code Answer

Here’s the thing. With everything that’s going on right now with COVID-19, it leaves the mind open to suggestion.

Our mind is constantly on alert for finding things that are wrong.

If we start looking at one thing that’s wrong…we get consumed by that idea. We go into the “creative energy” of making other things wrong.

That’s where we start having all these other problems.

Very rarely does it look like we’re creating this ourselves.

It’s like, “Well, now all my employees are having a problem, and my vendors are having a problem. Nobody’s collecting any money.” It seems like an external issue.

We then start expanding on that…by focusing on it more. That’s the “creative energy” we’re putting out into the universe around the thing we’re afraid of.

The idea is that you have to stop it. Forget about the problems.

Focus on: Where am I going? What is the result I want? What is the outcome I’m going to focus on?

And you start moving in that direction.

Even in my company, we’ve had to change many things over the last two months. Some things broke down. There were miscommunications within our team. There was a lot of pivoting, a lot of doing things last minute. A lot of things got overlooked.

I think as a business owner, you’re always faced with this choice of, “Do I look at this as something negative — or do I look at this as something positive?”

What’s worked for me is focusing on being super grateful for all those things that broke down…because they tell you where you need to grow and what you need to fix, so that you can have the business you want in 6 months, 12 months, or a year.

Don’t focus on the problems or beat yourself up for them. That actually keeps you in the problem.

If you find a problem, or someone on your team brings you a problem, it’s an opportunity to say, “Fantastic. Now we know what needs to be fixed. Now we have a crack to fill. That will help us as we move forward.”

Try to stay focused on how each “problem” will help you, how this will be one less issue you’ll have to solve in 6 months or in 12 months.

Focus on gratitude and where you’re going in growth.

Focus on WHY

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Mary B.

Neagle Code Question

I have a full-time job, have a desire to grow my virtual business and even work a part-time tutoring math. Do you feel it is possible to desire multiple things at once, or do we only have so much energy to give and should we focus it to maximize desired results?

Neagle Code Answer

Hi Mary, and thanks for your question.

I think it’s first important to get an understanding of WHY you want to be doing all of these things.

What’s your motivation behind working a full-time job, growing your business and tutoring?

Are you doing all of these things because you truly love them all?

Or are your motivations due to something else?

I have a hard time believing that you’re equally passionate about all three. So get really clear and honest about why you’re doing what you’re doing.

Ask yourself if you’re taking part in these businesses because you really love them or because you feel you SHOULD, you need the money, or you hope others appreciate you for your HARD WORK.

Do you have a belief that you can’t do what you love AND make money?

Are you creating distraction and chaos to keep yourself small?

You see, what you’re doing right now is chasing multiple bunnies.

You will get your best results when you can focus on ONE business and give all your energy to it.

Once you get clear on that, choose the one business you’re most passionate and inspired about and then give it your ALL. Burn the ships and don’t let anything stop you or stand in your way of achieving your goals.

The truth is that once you have a deep emotional desire for something and then EXPECT that desire to manifest, the Universe will respond. Emotion puts everything in motion, and if you’re not passionate about your business, you most likely won’t get the results you’re hoping for.

Where to focus when the unexpected sets you back

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

I'm beginning to feel a bit jaded about my work… it seems like regardless of how hard I try, I always only have “enough.”

I really desire more for my life but it seems like every time I make some traction, I also have an unexpected expense (i.e. owing more in taxes, car trouble, family emergency, etc.), and then the next month I make less, and I’m back where I started. Is this a wealth ceiling problem? Can you help me see what’s going on here?

Neagle Code Answer

Hi, and thanks so much for your question!

Based on your question, I do not believe you have a “wealth ceiling” problem.

Looks to me like you may have a focus problem.

Here’s the truth:

You’ll ALWAYS have
unexpected expenses.

What I’m wondering is:

What were you focused on as those
unexpected expenses began to pile up?

As the car trouble happened, were you focused on the car trouble or were you focused on hitting your monthly financial goal?

When you experienced a family emergency, were you focused on the emergency or on hitting your financial goal?

The truth is that those unexpected expenses were just distractions created by your sub-conscious mind to keep you from growing.

The key to solving this roller coaster problem is to continually stay focused on:

1)  What you want

      and

2)  What actions will take you closer to what you want

There will always be unexpected expenses, so set up an “unexpected expenses” bank account, and funnel a percentage of your monthly income into that account. That way, when an expense pops up, you’re “expecting” it and can easily pay for it without it being a distraction.

This will allow you to keep your focus on your goal.

A common misconception about working two businesses

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

For the last 15+ years of my life I have been bouncing back and forth between two completely different businesses in my life. It has kept me stuck and unproductive.

I LOVE both, but I don't have enough hours in a day to build either profession to the success I would like. The end result is that I am confused, tired, and broke.

I know that I need to decide between them. Leave (for good) one of them, and explode the one I choose into a great success.

I have been in this “place” of indecision for several years now…

Help me to understand and see what I am not seeing so I can make the decision that will move me forward into building a satisfying, productive and successful life and career.

Thank you!

Neagle Code Answer

Hi!

Thanks so much for your question.

You can’t chase two bunnies.

In simple terms, it means that whatever you focus on will grow. What’s happening right now is that you’re splitting your focus, and consequently, neither business is growing.

In your case, I would recommend that you choose one, and focus 90% of your time and energy on building that specific business. When you have that business up, running and successful, you can then hire people to help you expand, so that you can then focus on the other business.

So in essence you’re not saying you won’t build the second business ever, you’re just saying you’re not going to build it NOW.

There is a common misconception that you can only have one desire.

It’s just simply not true.

Many successful entrepreneurs have several loves and several businesses, but they built each one at a time.

I do have to be honest with you about something though. I sense that there is a hidden fear that is causing you to be indecisive.

• Do you doubt your ability to make money in either of these businesses?

• Are you worried what people will think if you choose one over the other?

• Is there something or someone you will need to let go of if you make a decision?

Get very clear on what the underlying fear is, and then make your decision.

Because you’ve changed your mind many times, you’ll have to be extra committed to honor the decision you’ve made and see it through to success.

Your ego may even create situations to get you to change your mind. These situations are merely illusions.

Remember: Because Spirit gave you the desire; Spirit has also given you the way to step into that desire.
