What’s OFF in this picture?

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I love your message and your work! My question is around finding the right clients.

I go to networking meetings and I market myself on line, but there is something wrong…I can’t seem to find the right people to talk to about my services. I’m not sure if it’s my branding, my message or how I introduce myself. Is there a “rule of thumb” to help me get clear on what may be “off”?

Neagle Code Answer

Thank you for your great question!

I love this question because it is an opportunity for you to really look at what you offer and define that one specific person that can use your product or service. When you define that person it becomes easier to find that individual.

The first thing to understand is that clarity is key.

The clearer you are on who it is that you are looking for (your target market), the easier it is to put the puzzle pieces together (where to go to meet these people, networking, marketing) so that you can actually find them.

When I say clarity here, I mean clarity like a whistle only a dog can hear. It is remarkable how that kind of clarity will totally attract that person when you couldn't see them before.

The first question you have to ask yourself is:

What are the explicit facts about my target market?

Are they male or female? Age? Are they married? Divorced? Do they have children? Where do they live? What kind of car do they drive? What is their favorite TV show? Do they exercise? What are their hobbies? What is the biggest purchase they have made? What do they want to change in their life right now?

Answer this from the place of the ONE potential client you can help the MOST.

The next question you have to ask yourself is :

What are the implicit nuances about this person?

What does she think and feel? What does she see, hear, say out loud and do in her day-to-day life? What is most painful to her? What is her biggest win? What is her buying mentality towards your product or service?

You need to be able to determine the readiness and willingness of this person to actually buy what you are selling at the level that you are asking.

I encourage you to do these exercises. By doing them, you will begin to have clarity and you will become like the whistle only dogs can hear.

You will not only find the right clients but the clients whom you love to work with!

After looking at your website …

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Kim Peterson. You can find her on the web at http://commonsensehealth.org/

Question:

Hi David,
I am passionate about helping people take their lives to the next level by changing paradigms about Health, Wellness & Success. I have spent the past two years building a following (500 group members, 2,100 + FB fans, & close to 11,000 Twitter followers), credibility and community…what I have not been doing is generating the financial reward I'd hoped. I am still having a challenge with what the actual business model is.
I love to help, generate a buzz and get people pumped but I need help with how that turns into cash. Please help!

Answer:

Hi Kim!

I understand why you're having problems with a business model…you're not clear on your target market.

After looking at your website, it's clear that you're passionate about health and wellness, but it's NOT clear what exactly you do.

Your blog is great. It's full of really helpful information about recipes, health and tips. It seems to me that it speaks to anyone who is interested in improving their health.

However, when I clicked your “How Can We Help” tab, the services you describe speak directly to the fellow health practitioner. You wrote about your passion and ability to help them build their business.

To me, this is really confusing.

Ask yourself, who you most enjoy working with. Do you like helping individuals improve their own health, or do you like helping other wellness professionals build their business?

Once you've made that decision, dig even deeper.

Who is this ideal client EXACTLY? Describe them in as much detail as if they were standing in front of you telling you all about themselves.

Then get very clear on what “symptoms” are showing up in this person's life or business.

This will lead you in creating a program or package that can help them and be of great service to them.

Success comes from personal contact …

Here is this week's question from my portal The Neagle Code: Directions for Life“. The individual who sent in this question wished to remain anonymous.

QUESTION:

I have niched into a specific business market for my coaching services and now write weekly blog posts on my site. I am submitting articles, blogging, social media (3), and have joined one of their organizations. And it is just HARD after 5 months….Why is it so hard to get coaching clients? My difficulties seem to be with likability within my target. Maybe I just have not found enough of them. Not sure.

ANSWER:

Here is a perfect example of how the combination of mindset and marketing are crucial for your business.

First, I want you to stop saying that it’s too hard to get clients. It’s not the truth. It’s as easy as having a conversation with someone in line at the grocery store.

Remember, you can’t have a desire without the means to fulfill that desire already present.

How many real conversations are you having with people every day about what you do?

How comfortable are you selling your coaching?

Are you hiding behind your computer?

Second, I want you to take a really good look at your target market and answer the following questions… (Hint: This is helpful for EVERYONE in business)

Form a picture of your ideal client in your mind. What is his or her name? (Don’t say it doesn’t matter, because it does.)

Part 1: How old is this person? What type of business are they in? Are they married? Do they have any children? What are their hobbies?

Know your ideal client right down to the color of their underwear.

Part 2: What are their “symptoms”? Why are they seeking your help? How are they feeling? What do they want?

Part 3: How can you help them? What will have been “fixed” by working with you?

Upon completion of this exercise, you’ll be able to very clearly see who you really want to work with, which will send a very clear message to the Universe. A large problem that I see with entrepreneurs is that they don’t want to exclude anyone in their marketing. This results in sending a fuzzy message to the Universe.

I get the distinct impression from your question that your perception has been that you’ll open your doors for business, use the on-line marketing strategies that everyone is teaching, and my ideal clients will rush in. You bought in to other people’s marketing message that building your business can be solely achieved from behind your computer.

If you take nothing else from this answer, remember this:

The key to success is personal contact especially in the early stages of the coaching business.

Attending entrepreneurial seminars, workshops and masterminds is crucial for you to meet other entrepreneurs, to learn about the success stories of others, and to foster possible joint venture relationships.
