How Do I Figure Out What I Want?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I find it hard to know exactly where I am in both my personal life and in business. I’m not sure how to set a goal that I can reach (that’s not wishful thinking). I don’t really know what I want.

What questions can I ask myself to figure this out? Also, how can I be sure I’ll hit the goal?

Neagle Code Answer

Hold on a second. That’s not true. You DO know what you want. You’re just not aware of it yet.

If you continue to say, “I don’t know,” that’s a command to your brain to stop thinking.

Don’t think of it as a goal you can reach. Think about it more from the perspective of, what do you really want?

Ask your higher self, “What do I want? Show me what’s going to excite me. Show me why I’m here.”

If you keep asking this question, the answer will come up.

Don’t rush it. Don’t push it.

Stop saying, “I don’t know,” because it’s in there. It’s in every person. All life has a purpose inside of it.

Your higher self will communicate it to you, if you’ll consistently ask it to.

Set a goal for something you seriously want, which you can work on over the next 90 days to achieve. It’s not about whether you reach the goal—it’s about whether you’re willing to work on it for the next 90 days.

I have no way of knowing whether you can hit a goal in 90 days. Neither do you, if it’s something you haven't done before.

The bigger question is…will you commit to doing it for 90 days?

Because it’s in the commitment that you’ll actually hit it in the timeframe you set.

Few people hit a goal the first time around, especially a new goal on a date they’ve set. There’s no way to know whether they’ll reach the goal by that date. It’s just like an estimation.

In the 90-day period, we’re looking to develop two things:

  1. Being our word, so that we consistently do the work for 90 days in a row.
  2. Change the paradigm inside of ourself, so that we can see the opportunity of what we want.

Success is literally about programming yourself to be able to see the opportunity. You have to consistently do that.

You’re an adult, so you have to change a pattern of what you see in life. A child only has to make up their mind what they want. An adult has to change their mind. There’s no prior imprint in the child’s mind.

For example, I’m 55. If I want to change something now that I’ve been dealing with my whole life—I have to realize I’ve had an imprint of that for 55 years. I need to work on changing that for a considerable amount of time, so that my eyes and intellect will see it as an opportunity in my life. Otherwise, I’m blind to it.

Why Do I Keep Losing Employees?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I feel like I’m having abandonment issues with my employees. We’ve lost three or four in the last few years, and now we’re losing another one. I don’t think it’s related to me as a boss.

I’m taking on some of the tough work myself, like taking out the garbage, because it has to be done. I feel like I’m trying to buffer my employees from some of the real work, and it’s making me exhausted. Is this is an issue of abandonment?—or of not hiring the right person?

Neagle Code Answer

Here’s the thing: you’re not “losing” another employee. You’re transitioning a person through your company.

Let’s not look at it as a loss. It’s not a loss. It’s an opportunity for you, and it’s an opportunity for them.

You can look at everything you did right with this person and everything you did wrong, and you can become a better person with the next one you hire.

It’s always easier to do that than to try to change behaviors that have been going on too long with a current employee.

If you feel bad about what’s happening, you’re going to treat yourself badly. You’ll immediately go into a story of, “This is a loss. We’ve lost something.” What happens when you lose something? You grieve. You feel bad. You’re not celebratory about it.

You’re letting the wrong thinking get into your head. You guys should be like, “Woohoo! This is fantastic. It’s an opportunity for us to find the next rockstar for our business.”

It’s also about acceptance. People come and go in businesses. Most people in your business aren’t there for a lifetime. This isn’t a family. It’s more like a sports team.

If you start looking at it as a family, you’ll get attached. When you get attached, it doesn’t matter what the reason is—you’re going to be hurt when it’s time for that person to go, because it’s an unnatural attachment.

The problem is being caused by the fact that you don’t want to look at the reality of “people coming and going in a business,” because it makes you constantly have to do something you don’t like to do, but you have to do.

It’s easier to wish they wouldn’t leave than to become so damn good at hiring that it never disturbs you.

If you have to add another person to create a backup in case someone leaves, then absolutely do that—if you have a real need for that. But make sure you’re not making an emotional decision. Make the decision that’s best for the business.

What’s best for the business?

Cleaning Up Past Messes

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

In the past, my law business consisted of the three of us, and some contractors. We didn’t have workflows in place and were just winging it.

Currently we have several fires that need to be put out on some of our old cases. I hired a new team, and I’m giving them new cases to work on. But it would really help if they jumped in and worked on the old stuff, so we can catch up on things.

I feel kind of embarrassed asking them to put out old fires. It makes me look disorganized. We have new workflows in place, along with new cases. We’re aiming for a spirit of excellence. But I’m embarrassed because in the past, it wasn’t quite a spirit of excellence in the business. How do I say, “Hey everybody, let’s jump in and put out all these fires”?

Neagle Code Answer

I think it’s just a simple conversation you would have with your new team.

There’s a lot of drama that you’re bringing to the table. I think it’s just a simple conversation:

You could say, “Here’s a bunch of stuff that needs to get done that’s left over from the past. We’re going to split this up between the team, and everybody’s going to take a portion, and we’re going to get this settled and get it complete.”

We’ve done this so many times in our company. We’ll hire someone and say, “Clearly we had no idea what we were doing prior to you, so now we need you to fix this.”

Don’t ever be embarrassed or ashamed. For God’s sake, none of us are perfect.

In essence, we’re all doing a bit of “building the airplane while it’s in the air” type thing.

There are things that need to be fixed from the past, from when you were bootstrapping something, or you didn’t have enough team, or you didn’t have the right systems in place, and it has to be cleaned up.

That’s just business. Every business has to deal with that to some degree.

Also, I think it’s important for your team to see that you’re empowering them to clean up the messes — and that they don’t always have to go to you for all the answers.

That instills a spirit of teamwork. Like, “Hey, you guys are great. Let’s get this cleaned up, and then let’s move on to the next thing.”

How to Hire the Best Candidate for Your Team

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

We’re in the process of hiring a new person in our business. We’ve found two good candidates. The first one (I think) would bring a high-quality work product and good potential networking abilities, because of their good connections.

The second one (I think) would be a good worker, and a better fit personality-wise with our team.

How do I determine who would be a better hire? What factors would you look at to decide? — the better fit, team-wise? Or the better fit when it comes to networking and potentially generating more revenue?

Neagle Code Answer

Personally, for me, it would be — do they fit in with the company culture, first and foremost?

Without that, nothing else matters.

If they would both fit into the culture, and you’re trying to decide or differentiate

who would be better…there’s a really good book I would recommend you read called Ideal Team Player: How to Recognize and Cultivate The Three Essential Virtues Kindle Edition  by Patrick M. Lencioni.

That book suggests that you look for three qualities, besides the fact that they fit culturally:

  1. They need to be humble, meaning they value team and don’t value their own credit over everyone else’s.
  2. They need to be hungry, which means they’re willing to work above and beyond (think: outside normal work hours), and go the extra mile.
  3. They need to be smart. Meaning, they need to be able to think their way through solutions and also in interpersonal relationships.

Those are three big areas to look at in terms of hiring the right person.

The book also has sample interview questions you can use to determine if someone is hungry, humble, or smart. I would recommend reading it!

How Long Should I Stick With A Strategy?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

How long would you recommend sticking with a certain strategy for growing my business — before I decide it’s not getting a good enough response and I should try something else?

…Versus am I giving up too soon?

Neagle Code Answer

I think the hard part is that you don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water.

A lot of people will try a strategy, and if they don’t get the results they want, they’ll just throw the entire strategy out.

What we’re seeing now with marketing is that if you tweak things, you’ll get a different result.

The idea is that you start with something. Then make small tweaks to individual things within that strategy — until you’ve gone through all of those little things and determined, “Yes, this is working,” or “No, this is not working.”

There are so many little things that will have an impact on whether a marketing strategy is effective or not.

The biggest mistake I see is that people try something that looks like a good idea — and then it doesn’t work. So, they throw the whole thing out and start from scratch. That’s the worst thing you can do.

You want to take it piece by piece:

“Okay, that didn’t work. So, what’s one thing in here we can tweak? We can tweak the copy, or the picture, or change it from a picture to a video. Or change from a video to a picture. Let’s see what the results tell us…”

Keep doing this until you narrow it down, and you’ve got a great strategy that works.

Or if it doesn’t work, you’ve got a lot of data to take into the next strategy…rather than just starting from scratch each time.

In most cases, you’ll never hit points A through Z 100%. That hardly ever happens. You’ve got to test and refine as you go.

That’s what we’re doing with our social media (for example). We’re watching what kind of engagement we get on certain types of content.

We have “content buckets” of things like Q&A, funny memes, and playing around with the timing of each post, and which days we’re putting stuff out.

If we want to post a meme and get engagement on it, we’re not putting it out on a Sunday. We’ll put it out on a weekday.

But we wouldn’t know that unless we first put it out on a Sunday.

If we just said, “Oh, well, that didn’t work…” then we never would have learned that memes don’t get much response on Sundays.

So, take into consideration and pay attention to when you’re putting content out. And do these little tweaks I mentioned earlier (picture, image, video, etc).

Just start with small changes, and see what they tell you.

Compared and Confused

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

I’m an attorney. I’ve been comparing myself a lot with other attorneys out there who focus in my area.

I feel like I’m getting down on myself because I’m not doing the 10 things they’re doing. I’m thinking, “Well, these other attorneys are all offering templates, they have podcasts, etc.”

How do I know what is good to look at — in terms of generating good ideas and figuring out what works for me? — versus getting caught up in the comparison game?

Neagle Code Answer

The consumer response will tell you how good an idea is.

The best advice is to stay in your own unique authenticity.

As you try things, look at the responses you get and carefully track data.

With social media, podcasts, and the like, there are two things people are consuming on there:

One is information, the other is entertainment.

Bring your unique, authentic personality to it and decide what is your strength — is it to inform? And can you do it in an entertaining way or not?

Know what your strength is, double down on it, and play with it.

It’s interesting because it causes us to have to break through vulnerabilities that business people typically didn’t have to break through before.

You have to determine whether or not you’re good at a particular activity. And if you’re not good at it, then you have to find out what mode of communication via those vehicles you can be good at.

Is it writing? Speaking? Video? And then you take it from there.

Just see how people respond to different things.

That’s all that matters — how people respond.

If they’re not responding, then you’ve got to switch something up and start testing different things until you get them to respond.

It does require that you think about what you’re doing, what your message is, and what kind of response you’re looking to get with the people you’re trying to reach.

The Key to Finding the Solution

The Key to Finding the Solution

If you feel stuck, like you’re out of options, or if you feel like you’ve got a block… then I want you to take a deep breath and allow me to lead you through your blind spot.

It doesn’t take luck to uplevel your life, only your desire to grow… and I’m about to show you how.

In the last article, I mentioned that the polar opposite of lack is abundance.

The Law of Polarity says if we’re experiencing anything in lack, the polar opposite of that (abundance) must also exist.

To illustrate this, I want you to do an exercise:

Pick up any object that’s near you — a pen, pencil, sheet of paper. It doesn’t matter what it is. If you hold it in front of you, you’ll realize it’s a “whole” thing.

It’s not a partial thing.

It has a front and a back, a left side and a right side. A top and a bottom.

If I’m holding a marker, I’m holding a WHOLE marker, not half of a marker or a fraction of a marker. The marker has a left side and a right side to it. You can’t have the left without the right. Both must exist for it to be a marker.

The same is true for everything in the universe.

Everything has a polar opposite.

Both sides always exist.

If you have a problem, two sides must exist — the problem and the solution. You can’t have a problem without a solution also being present.

That means if you have a “lack” of money (the problem), then you also have an “abundance” of money all around you (the solution)…even if you can’t see it, due to your belief system not letting you see it!

Now what is the great hope that comes out of this understanding?

Once we begin to see with an inner eye of understanding in our heart, then we’ll start to see something different in our external life. We’ll see with our eyes the outer abundance that lies all around us.

When we do that, we have the possibility of changing any situation. Literally in that moment, we can change our circumstances.

You could even change your income. Turning your annual income to a monthly income becomes a real possibility.

What Creates a Blind Spot?

What Creates a Blind Spot?

What creates a blind spot in our thinking? What causes us to only see lack, limitation, and problems everywhere we look?

The answer is our belief system.

Take a look at your life — specifically your results, circumstances, environment, and money.

Those things are being created by the belief system you have about each of those things.

Our belief system is causing all of this to appear in our life — whether it shows up as “abundance” or “lack.”

First, we see our situation with our eyes. We see our results, circumstances, environment, and our financial situation.

This “information” is then fed back into our conscious mind (i.e., our thinking mind)…which then reinforces the feelings we have about those things.

Usually those feelings don’t make us feel very good… because if we have a blind spot, then there’s a “problem” we can’t seem to change.

The blind spot causes you to focus on problems in your life, rather than solutions.

Back when I was working on the dock, I was frustrated and angry. I didn’t know how to change my circumstances, because my eyes kept telling me the story of what my experience was.

My experience confirmed to me over and over again that my world was filled with “lack.”

I had no time, no money, no opportunities, no friends…

How many times has your life — your eyes —
confirmed
the story of “lack” in your life?

How many times has your life — your eyes — confirmed the story of “lack” in your life?

Think about what you don’t have right now.

You might not have enough:
– money
– opportunity
– time
– resources

Ask yourself, “How do I feel about that? What does that feeling cause me to think?”

Often, it causes people to lose hope…because they can’t see beyond whatever their experience is telling them they’re seeing.

This happens because they don’t understand the Law of Polarity.

This law dictates that if we’re experiencing anything in lack, the polar opposite of that is abundance.

If you don’t have something, that’s a clear indication that you DO have it. You’re just not seeing it…because your belief system isn’t allowing you to see it.

Are you seeing only one side?

Are you seeing
only one side?

If you’ve been following me at all this month you know that my focus has been on The Universal Laws. To be more specific, I’ve focused on the Universal Law of Polarity.

You see, most people live in judgment and one-sided beliefs that cause polarization of the Law of Polarity, meaning that if we don’t change or learn anything different, we go through our entire lives only seeing half of what life has to offer.

The half that we see is really based on how we’re programmed as a child.

This programming tells us how to behave, how to act, and how to perceive everything that is taking place in our world.

This is where this Law of Polarity allows change to actually start to take place.

The Law of Polarity states that everything has an opposite, and it’s equal and opposite. You can’t have a right without a left, an up without a down, an in without an out or a top without a bottom. You can’t have just one side of a thing. The opposite side must also exist and exist in the exact same place.

You cannot have a desire without the means for that desire already present.

I had absolutely no idea that the opportunity for me to go from $20,000 a year to $62,000 a year was around my physical being for at least two years before I became aware of it.

But once I became aware of it, it happened instantaneously, in a matter of 30 days.

And here’s the truth of what changed things for me:

In order for us to see the whole that is around us,
we must become whole.

I’ve been telling people this for years. It is really about who we become that allows us to have the change in our life that we so desire.

If we allow ourselves to become whole, then we’re able to change our awareness around what it is that we can perceive in our life.

When we change that perception, we can do something different.

We need to heal the stories within ourselves that contain half-truths, victimizations, pain, anger, shame, guilt and anything else that polarizes the mind and our thinking, including but not limited to superstitions, fairytales and, this is a big one, the addiction-like need to feel special.

Why? Because most times the opportunity we seek comes in the form of misfortune or defeat, and because of our stories, we brush them aside, run from them, or create lists in our minds of why we can’t say yes.

So let me ask you, what is in your life right now that you are saying no to, that you should be saying YES to?

Until next time…

When you get a surprise tax bill…

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I’m a consultant and have been in business for about 5 years, and have steadily grown (at an admittedly slow pace). I guess you could say my growth has been incremental rather than a quantum leap.

Well this year I messed up, and I have been “slapped” with a 5-figure tax bill, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I was a little freaked out about how I’m going to pay my taxes and my own expenses.

Any suggestions on how to become aware of how to create a pretty big influx of cash quickly?

Neagle Code Answer

You know…I’ve had this question several times in the last couple of months, and there IS a solution!

When I was new in business I too experienced a similar situation, and needed to create a pretty big cash injection in a REALLY short time frame.

Here’s what you need to remember:

Based on the Law of Polarity, if you have a definite need, then the way to satisfy that need must also be present.

So the first thing you need to understand is that your situation is not without a solution. In fact, the solution is most likely very close to you.

From an energetic perspective you must DEMAND that the solution be shown to you. This may seem crazy, but when I need to see a solution, I will stomp around my office and demand at the top of my lungs to be shown the opportunity needed to solve my problem.

It MUST be there.

Second, you need to remain open to opportunity, and let me tell you, the opportunity to solve your problem may not seem appealing to you. In fact it may require that you re-examine something or do something you’ve been resisting for quite some time.

In other words, the solution will most likely be uncomfortable.

Once the opportunity is identified, you’ll need to sell. Whether you’re selling your services or you’re selling someone else on an idea or solution, you’ll need to influence someone to do something.

Sounds simple, I know…and it is if you’re armed with the right tool, which is why on Tuesday, I’ll be hosting a FREE training titled: 6-Figure Sales Secret. During this training I’ll actually share my experience in creating the solution to the very same problem you’re looking to solve…HOW to create a large cash injection in a short amount of time.
