Are You “Cradled in Convention”?

Are You “Cradled in Convention”?

What is your purpose? Why are you here? And are you taking that “out to the edge”?

In other words — are you pushing yourself to the very edge of what you’re capable of, as it relates to your purpose in life?

In his poem, “The Call of the Wild,” Robert William Service talks about how other people have created us in their convention:

They have cradled you in custom, they have primed you with their preaching,
They have soaked you in convention through and through;
They have put you in a showcase; you’re a credit to their teaching…

When we’re “cradled in convention,” this results in us seeing the entire world through someone else’s eyes — and through somebody else’s experience (rather than our own).

That’s what our parents did. They soaked us in “convention” — i.e., indoctrinated us into the way they did things.

They created a “box” for us to live in.

Outside of that box is TRUTH…which sets you free.

If we could stand in the full truth of our being (i.e., who we truly are) — it would totally set us free.

We’d stop struggling. We wouldn’t have much difficulty accomplishing what we want to accomplish. We wouldn’t fight ourselves all that much.

It’s very difficult to get to this truth when the only part of your world you can experience, is through a very narrow vision of what life is.

You have your environment, your circumstances, and your results.

…And you have a very narrow “box” through which you observe or perceive those things.

Your beliefs control your perception.

Your values control your perception.

The wounds you’ve had throughout your lifetime control your perception.

When most people get wounded, they don’t see the “truth” in it. They see the pain in it. Instead of expanding their life, the pain contracts it.

It says, “Don’t do this again…don’t experience that again, because that causes pain.” So their life contracts.

They start to see LESS of what they saw before — until their world becomes very small. It keeps them in a very narrow perception of what’s going on. So they can’t see the truth.

If we’re going to change this in our own life…then one of the things we have to do is begin to understand what the truth looks like.

By studying the laws of the universe, we bring truth into our awareness.

How Do I Find My Purpose?

How Do I Find My Purpose?

For the past 20 years, one of the most popular and common questions I’ve gotten is: “What’s my purpose?”

People ask me this all the time.

“What was I put here to do? How do I find my purpose? How do I step into my purpose?”

It almost gets to the point of a dysfunctional obsession… where they can’t think of anything else. They’re like, “I've gotta find my purpose, I’ve gotta find my purpose…”

The answer is not hard.

In fact, our purpose is not something we need to “find” to begin with.

We’re already in our purpose right now.

No matter what you’re doing or experiencing in your life right now — you’re already in your purpose.

You might be thinking, “How could that be? I don’t even like what I’m doing. I’m not making the money I want to make. I’m living in fear. I have anxiety, pain, or sickness. I have trouble in my relationships. I have dreams that I want to pursue, but no idea how to get there…”

“So how could I possibly be in my purpose?”

Here’s the truth:

Whatever you’re doing or experiencing right now, at this point in your life, is absolutely required for you to make a different decision today or tomorrow to do what you were put here to do.

In fact, everything that’s already happened in your life up to this point was 100% essential to get you to where you are right now.

All of your experiences shaped you in some way, and taught you something that you need to understand, in order to move forward.

I suggest you take a pen and paper, and spend several hours reflecting over your life, and everything you’ve learned.

Most people have never examined their own life. Nor have they put much thought into what all of their experiences have taught them.

I encourage you to do this. Think about what you’ve learned throughout your life, what you’d like to change, and what’s needed to move yourself in a different direction.

Going through this process will reveal any changes you want to make in your life.

And remember… you’re already in your purpose.

I didn’t know how either

I Didn't Know How Either

When I started my company over 17 years ago, I came to a crossroads.

I had to choose between staying at my corporate job (where I worked for a direct fuel distributor) — or walking away, so that I could step into something related to my dream (my life’s purpose).

I didn’t know what my dream or purpose was, exactly.

All I knew was that if I stayed in my job, I would never be able to live my dream.

Today people always ask me, “David, how do I do this? Here’s what I want. But I get stuck in the how.”

Well, I was stuck in the same place. I had no idea “how” to do what I’m doing today. I had to learn all of that along the way.

But I couldn’t learn any of it without first coming to that crossroads — and then having the faith to make a right turn instead of a left turn.

“Left turn” was staying in a place that was comfortable.

“Right turn” meant stepping out in faith towards my dream… and making the decision that I would let Spirit (or God) lead my life.

I had to trust that the opportunity would show up, and it would guide me to where I am now.

To the average person, that’s crazy… quitting your job to follow a dream.

I was married, had four kids, a mortgage, car payments, the whole thing. I had everything we call “the American Dream.”

I was going to risk it all to follow what some people would think is a crazy dream that had no basis in reality.

I’d never done it before. Nobody I knew had ever done it before, and nobody even knew how to do it.

How do you make a decision that seems absolutely nuts in most people’s minds?

It required that I gain more than an ordinary knowledge of FAITH.

Faith would allow me to step out and embrace my dream… and do it while knowing EVERYTHING that was required for me to succeed, would show up.

That’s exactly how I did it. I totally stepped into that road.

I studied faith and applied it to my life. This allowed me to overcome a massive amount of fear.

On this day before Thanksgiving, I urge all of you to take a few moments and remember those times in your life where you stepped outside of the box, did something no one thought you could do, or really followed what your inner voice was telling you to be, do or have.

Be grateful for your own courage and faith and all the people and resources that supported you… and remind yourself that you CAN do GREAT things through the power of decision, faith and action!

Shamed and Guilted

Shamed and Guilted

We understand that a need for safety and security makes us cling to a mindset that may not support our growth.

Next, we need to examine the mechanics of how we stay trapped in this mindset, and there are two things which I think serve as guards keeping you trapped in the safety seeking mindset: shame and guilt.

These two feelings have an extraordinary power, and all over world, people use them to manipulate other people.

Think about it: it’s how we get kids to obey us, it’s how the media controls people and opinions, and how governments control opinions and behavior.

If you commit a crime, you’re found guilty.

If you do something abnormal or unusual, then you’re expected to feel shame, and often communities will go out of their way to publicly shame offending individuals.

The same thing applies to you,
when you try to live in your purpose.

Growing up, living in a middle class mindset, you surround yourself with people who also buy into that mindset. They have a very limited scope of what they believe to be possible, and when they encounter desires, either their own or someone else’s, that seem to stretch beyond that scope, it startles them, and in that fear they lash out.

It happens all the time.

You’ll hear about parents who never went to school getting angry with their kids for going to college or getting higher paying jobs than they have.

It doesn’t have to be that extreme—sometimes it just manifests as doubt, or as questions. That happened to me.

My mom, whenever I would bring up a desire or a dream, would always ask, “Well, what if something happens?”

The crazy thing is, she could never articulate what that something might be or what the negative consequences were.

She was just constantly worried that something might happen. And I internalized that, and it took me a while to work past it.

All of what I just said serves as examples of how people and societies use shame and guilt to reinforce an unsupportive mindset.

In stepping into your purpose, following your dreams and desires, you will brush up against a lot of shame and guilt. People will say that you’re disloyal, irresponsible, a jackass, greedy, self-centered, have your head in the clouds, etc.

Then, internally, you might start to feel guilty about the decisions you’ve made or feel ashamed about what you want.

To move forward and really live your purpose, you need to be able to move past that shame and guilt. If you can’t you’ll get trapped in this crazy cycle where you want something, start to go for it, feel bad, and quit.

You have to remove the shame and the guilt from your life, because what lies on the other side is true freedom.

Until next time…

A Paradigm Shift

A Paradigm Shift

If you’re reading this article, chances are you’ve reached a point in your life where what you want is colliding with what you think you can have.

You might feel dissatisfied with your life, upset at your prospects, tired of your job, whatever it might be, because you know that your life has a greater purpose than whatever you’re living right now.

You’re correct.

As I’ve discussed, we all have a specific purpose in life that we can step into. However, from a young age, we learn to deny that purpose and the desires connected to it. Why would anybody want to deny it?

The answer is simple, a fundamental fact of life:

When we’re born, we need to survive.

For the first years of our lives, we depend completely on our parents for all of our needs. Because everything we need comes from our parents—food, shelter, clothing, doctors visits, love—we, naturally, do whatever we can to make sure that they keep supporting us. Usually, this means that we learn and adapt to their mindset and their ways of behaving.

We value what they value, want what they want, and think how they think, all so that they will accept us and so we won’t feel threatened in our home.

Sounds great, right?

Except that’s not
our purpose.

Our purpose goes beyond that. However, when we’re young, we don’t recognize that we aren’t living true to our purpose, and we don’t recognize how dysfunctional this form of thinking is. We just keep trying to survive, trying to fit in, trying to be safe.

Ultimately, we’ve traded our purposes for safety.

To move forward, we have to sacrifice our illusion of safety, for our purpose.

I say illusion of safety because, the crazy thing is, we don’t have to make this trade. We will be safe—even more safe—living within our purpose and following our desires. How could we not be?

Our purpose resides to our spiritual DNA, it will always guide us towards more growth and more life.

Sadly, most people will go through their entire lives without realizing that they can live within their purpose, because it requires a lot of courage to do this. Any time that you begin to question the middle class mindset, your old paradigm of thinking, your subconscious mind will flare up.

Your subconscious has learned that there is one way to survive—whether that’s to fit in, go to Church, go to work, make your house payment—whatever it might be. As soon as you start to question these patterns, your subconscious thinks that you’re putting yourself in danger.

Those messages will get to your conscious mind, and, if you’re not aware of the way these processes work, you’ll stop going forward, and you’ll return to safety.

So, it takes a lot of courage to move away from where you feel safe. But, there is something good that comes from this impulse: you can follow your fear.

Usually, if the idea of making a specific change in your life scares you, then that’s exactly what you need to go out and do, because that fear is the middle class mindset trying to hold you back from your desires.

Follow your fear, step into your purpose, and you’ll start to see dramatic results.

And until next week…

How Do I Find My Purpose?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

My question is simple: How do I find my purpose?

Neagle Code Answer

Because I have received this question multiple times in the last couple of days, I’m going to address it directly on.

Finding your purpose comes from knowing who you truly are and what you desire.

Your purpose is already within you and it isn’t something you look for outside yourself.

I’m sure you’ve heard my story about my boating accident where I almost died after being sucked into a dam. When I was hanging onto a tree branch for dear life, I made a promise to God that I would figure out why I hadn’t been able to do the things that I knew I should have been doing. And then do them.

Right after the accident, nothing happened. God didn’t tell me what to do. After much frustration, I realized God wasn’t going to tell me what to do. I had to make that decision myself. I started by asking myself, “What am I going to do with the rest of my life?”

At first I didn’t know the answer. I kept asking myself the question and then answers began to come forward. The first three answers I received and acted upon were to:

1. Change my attitude
2. Treat everyone with total respect
3. Do everything to the best of my ability.

Now, this didn’t immediately give me the answer to my life purpose. It did help me to change and to raise my awareness. Whenever we raise our awareness, we discover more of who we truly are. The more we know who we truly are, the more answers were given about our unique gifts we have to share with the world.

The key here is to continue to ask yourself conscious questions to raise your awareness of who you are. Everyday, ask yourself, “What am I going to do with the rest of my life?” and “What do I really want?”

Just as I did and continue to do, follow the answers you are given as if they were bread crumbs creating a path and you will find yourself living your “purpose.”

Overwhelmed by advice?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I stumbled upon the self-improvement industry about a year ago…and since then I’ve gone to work trying to fix myself so that my results get “fixed”. My issue is that there are so many people out there telling you want you need to do, what you need to believe and what you need to change, that I find I’m overwhelmed…and then I don’t change anything. How do I clear the noise and focus on what matters most?

Neagle Code Answer

I LOVE this question!!!

You see, I’ve been blessed to be a part of an industry that has allowed me to use my gifts to help other people… but there is a negative connotation to “self-improvement” that I believe is hindering progress.

That negative connotation denotes that there is something wrong with us to begin with, and I want to put that idea to rest.

We are perfect as we are right now. Let me rephrase that:

You are perfect as
you are right now.

The real issue is ignorance and what ignorance creates.

Part of my purpose is to eradicate this ignorance by teaching the Laws of the Universe and how to use them with an intention to live an amazing life. When we’re intentionally living our purpose and sharing our gifts, we’re also living in the power of our own creation.

This is why I believe self-improvement should be called intentional improvement.

I recorded an entire podcast episode on this topic, and I feel like the podcast may be able to answer this questions better than I could type it.

In the episode I give you some tips that will allow you to do things intentionally which will have a dramatic impact on your life and allow you to change things very rapidly…without all the noise.

Click below to listen to that episode.

And always remember…there’s nothing to be fixed.

All change starts with awareness, so that’s where I suggest you start.

What is your life’s purpose? 3 questions to help you find it

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Miranda.

Neagle Code Question

I understand about purpose, do what you love and the money will follow, but I don't have a clue what I should be doing. How do I find my purpose?

[5 Simple Steps to Unshakeable Self-Confidence Series] Article #1 ~ You Were Born Self-Confident

You’ve surely seen this phenomenon:

Someone who was raised in poverty achieves a great deal of success, while another person, who seemingly was given every advantage in life, squanders it.

If you’ve ever wondered why that is, seemingly is the word to notice.

Because, while that advantaged person may have been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, the person raised in lesser circumstances actually got the better deal, if she was raised to have confidence in herself.

Let Me Lead You to Confidence
When I was first starting out in my own business, I was also doing sales training for the company owned by my mentor, Bob Proctor.

After a couple of these trainings, I noticed that one of the biggest problems plaguing my trainees was their lack of self-confidence.

Thinking I had the key, I told Bob that all we had to do was teach them confidence.

He looked at me and said, “You can’t teach a person confidence.”

I quickly disagreed. I figured if you can get the idea, you can do anything. And while that’s true, I realized later what he meant.

I can’t teach you to be confident. I can, however, lead you to it.

I can lead you through this 5-part process for developing self-confidence, and hope that, like the proverbial horse, you drink it in.

But before you start taking that draft of self-confidence, you need to understand how it develops.

You Were Born This Way
Webster’s dictionary defines self-confidence in part as, “A feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something.”

You were born self-confident. Nothing inside you stopped you from exploring your world.

Now, some of us were fortunate to have guardians who nurtured our native confidence, so that, rather than withering on the vine, it actually grew.

And, despite any unfortunate circumstances, we actually achieve the goals that we set. We’re on purpose in our life, and we break through barriers and obstacles that we encounter along the way.

If you weren’t raised to have unshakeable self-confidence, don’t despair, because you can develop it in yourself, like I did.

The truth is you have the ability to do virtually anything that you can wrap your mind around.

When you were a toddler, you knew that.

Just think about how many times a toddler falls down before she finally learns to stand, and then walk. It’s really phenomenal, when you think about the confidence it takes for a toddler to keep getting up.

But she does. She has an idea of walking, and she tries again and again until she succeeds.

You can be like that toddler again.

If you apply the five steps in this series, you can develop self-confidence that, in time, will become unshakeable.

And once you do that, virtually nothing is off-limits. You can do, be, or have whatever you want.

How do I find my real purpose?
