Overcoming the fear of success

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Pamela.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

Can you please tell me how to get over the fear of success? I believe it’s what’s continually stopping me from hitting my goals!

Thank you so much!

Neagle Code Answer

Hi Pamela, and thanks for your question!

The truth is that no one is actually afraid of success.

That’s a false belief created by our ego.

If you were afraid of success, you’d never put your pants on the in the morning, because even putting your pants on is a success.

In reality what people ARE afraid of is:

1) The fear of what they believe they will have to sacrifice to be successful. This is mainly true in regard to relationships. Are you afraid someone will leave?

2) The fear of what people will think if they were successful or wealthy. How would your family respond if you stood up and told them you decided to be insanely wealthy?

3) The fear of what people will think if they fail.

These are the top 3, but of course there are many other beliefs that keep us bound in chains and constantly striving for success, yet never achieving it.

So you are correct, you are sabotaging your success.

Universal truth states that we create everything; all the good and bad, all the successes and all the failures.

So you need to get very clear on how never achieving the success you want keeps you safe.

I know you’re thinking, “No David, not having the success keeps me feeling unsafe, why would I not want success?”

And I would answer that you have to consider what belief is renting space in your brain, because if you wanted success as much as you wanted air to breath, you would have it.

Why “the fear of success” is a myth

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Amanda B.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I recently heard you say that a fear of success is not real. And yet, I think I have a fear of success. I have every opportunity to have a thriving business, but when I get close to thriving, I put the brakes on. Can you explain to me how this is NOT the fear of success, because it sure feels like it.
 Thanks!

Neagle Code Answer

Hi Amanda,

First, I want to be clear. What you are dealing with is not the fear of success.

No one is afraid of success. You succeed in different areas of your life everyday.

What you are struggling with is the fear of what you believe you will need to leave behind in order to achieve success.

You put the brakes on because:

A) You’re worried about what people are going to think of you if you make a mistake

B) You’re worried about what people will think of you if you do achieve success

C) You’re worried about who you will need to leave behind if you seek your own success

D) You’re worried about what you will have to give up to accept success into your life

You see, it’s never about the fear of success, it’s about the stories you have around success.

Check in with yourself right now.

Ask yourself the following questions:

1) Who will I need to walk away from to be successful?

2) What risks will I need to take that may threaten my fear of what people may think of me?

3) What things will I need to walk away from that will no longer support my success?

4) Am I willing to do whatever it takes for my own success?

These questions will help you see how your sub-conscious mind is getting in your way of standing confident in your decision-making.

As soon as you shine the light of the truth on this, you’ll be able to see things in a whole new way!

How to Overcome The Fear of Success

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions
for Life”
comes from Bryan.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

What does it mean to have a fear of Success? Is it any different than a fear of failure? If so, what do you believe helps to move past/overcome this fear of success? My business is moving so fast and could be very successful if I were to stop hesitating. I am determined to stop getting in my own way, yet am still feeling afraid.

Thanks!

[Fast Cash Formula Series] Article #13 ~ How To Seize Opportunity

So far in this series, we have taken these three steps:

Step 1. Identify your “need,” the amount to the penny of your monthly bills.
Your need is a snapshot of where you are. In order to get where you want to go, you have to start where you are. If you’re already meeting your need every month, identify what you want, your financial goal.

Step 2. Determine why you need it.
You created the situation or circumstances in your life that you need that money for. Taking responsibility for those situations can lead you to powerful life changes.

Step 3. Become aware of the right opportunity to get what you need or want.
Opportunities are all around you. One or two will lead you to your goal, but others will not. Over the past several weeks, I helped you determine the best opportunity for you. (If you missed any articles in this series, you can find them here.)

As I’ve said, the right opportunity + action = success. This leads us to Step 4, which is:

Step 4. Take action on the opportunity.

Once you’ve determined the right opportunity, step into it completely and see it all the way through to its conclusion.

You probably won’t know exactly how or under which circumstances the opportunity will bring you what you want, and this is where people falter. Before they step into the opportunity, they want to know what’s going to happen. What will be required of them? But it’s just not possible to know that.

In order to achieve something you’ve never had before, you have to grow, you have to face some challenges and you have to change. You couldn’t possibly know in advance what those changes will be. Trying to imagine and control those future changes will only hold you back because that creates doubt, fear, and anxiety. Before you know it, you’re not doing anything but sitting around thinking about what you know you should be doing.

You need to step into the opportunity, with faith, trusting the Law of Polarity, which states that the money you need is around you right now. You did the footwork, as I showed you to do, to find that perfect opportunity for you, so now you just have to trust the universe and yourself.

Expect Success

When you step into the opportunity, expect success.

Expecting success actually changes your actions. You’re willing to do much more than if you were harboring doubt. Therefore, your expectation of success actually helps to create it. For instance, if you expect your teleseminar to fill, you’ll keep working up to the very last minute. You won’t give up, saying, “I guess it wasn’t meant to be.”

Instead, you’ll say, “My teleseminar is filling. I know it is. I’m going to keep at it until it does.”

And guess what happens? You brim with ideas and actions, the universe starts to help you and your teleseminar fills because failure was never an option.

As I’ve said, people don’t fail, they quit.

When you step out in faith, expecting success, and pursue your opportunity all the way to its conclusion, you will collect the money you need.

It will be there. That’s the promise of the Law of Polarity. Like gravity it absolutely never fails.

What fear is squatting on prime real estate in your brain?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Val Charman.  You can find her on the web at www.valcharman.co.uk.

Question:

Dear David,

Please can you tell me how you get past the fear of success? I know that I'm not afraid of failure as I have done that many times but just as I get close to a breakthrough, or am in danger of achieving my goal, something bad happens and I have to start all over again. I am convinced that I am sabotaging my own success out of some inbuilt fear and I don't know how to overcome it.

Many thanks for your help.

Can I buy you a drink?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Miranda.

Question:

Hi David! Thanks so much for the opportunity to ask this question! I recently heard a teaching you did on the importance of environment, but I'm having a hard time understanding how my environment affects my business results. Can you explain this please?

Answer:

Absolutely.

As a person grows, they change.

And they change in a way that is not always supported by their physical environment.

This is why we'll see people who will come to a workshop and make huge strides in their personal growth, only to return home and go right back into their old patterns.

Let me make this even more simple.

If you were an alcoholic, and you had stopped drinking, would you continue to return to the bar every day?

You'd get out of the bar and stay out because the being in the bar wouldn't be supporting your success.

You may even seek out other people who have stopped drinking as well so that you'll have the support you need.

Imagine how much more successful you'd be if you would surround yourself with people and things that supported you rather than trying to pull you back into being who you once were.

Look around you.

Are you surrounding yourself with beautiful things that represent who you want be?

Do your relationships support your growth or do they stifle it?

If you answered no to either of those questions, you've got some work to do.

Even the smallest of changes in your environment will make a difference in your success.

No clients? Blame the dishwasher…

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Erica Johansson. You can find her on the web at http://www.travelblissful.com/

Question:

Hi David,

I read your latest article on making decisions and your words “If you don't change your environment, you're constantly reminded of your old belief system and the things that you created from it ” struck a chord.

Self-development coaches often say it's ALL in one's mind, the external doesn't necessarily matter, so isn't it possible to affect one's current environment just by turning old negative belief patterns into positive ones?

Answer:

Hi Erika!

Fantastic question!

It's true. Everything is in your mind. Your hopes, dreams, fears, doubts, worries and all the programming that you received without the ability to reject it when you were a child are all there.

And you can affect your old environment by turning negative beliefs into positive ones, ONLY if you replace the old pattern with a new one.

Here's an example. Let's say Mary wants to lose weight. She knows she has an unhealthy relationship with food and suffers from cravings. In her mind, she “decides” she's going to do it, she's going to finally take care of herself and drop a few pounds.

Can she be successful doing the same things she was doing before making this decision?

NO.

She has to replace the old patterns with new ones, and then create an environment to support her. If she had brownies on the counter all day and her favorite ice cream in the freezer, she'd have less of a chance of creating a new pattern.

This works the same way with entrepreneurs.

Let's say Amanda knows she needs to make sales calls. She knows she's afraid of what people will think of her and she's worried she'll be rejected. Her current pattern is to do everything in her business OTHER than make sales calls. She cleans the floors, answers emails, does the laundry, and empties the dishwasher during the time she knows she needs to be calling.

Then let's say she decides she's going to do it. She's going to get on the phone and make the calls no matter what.

In order for her to be successful, she must restructure her day, hire a cleaning service so she's not distracted, and create a NEW PATTERN for herself. If she doesn't change her environment, she's highly likely to get sucked back into her old patterns.

She must create her environment around who she WANTS TO BE.

During the changing process the new belief pattern is weak and needs to be strengthened. By putting as many representations of the new pattern around you that you can increases your possibility of success.

Not a TOTAL failure? Then you’re not scared of success!

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from an individual who wishes to remain anonymous.

Question:

How does one push aside the self sabotage that shows up at every step up? I am extremely intelligent and an expert in my field. I guide people well, and when the time comes for me to take the next step – with all eyes watching and applauding – I stop and walk in another direction, as if I'm shy. Others are speaking and touring and helping people and I am stuck standing in my own mud. I have been doing this “side step” for about 10 yrs now and I will be 50 next yr Feb '12. I am changing many things in my life now, I want to see glorious changes at the age of 50! I know I can do it, I think I need help, a sidekick? I don't know really or I would have done it by now. And yes, I kick myself constantly for not being more at this age.

Answer:

Thanks for submitting this question.

First, I want to invite you to applaud yourself for what you HAVE accomplished thus far in your life. Let go of the judgment of yourself, so you can see clearly what’s causing this pattern.

If you look to the Laws for the truth, you’ll find that you have created everything in your life, and you’ve created it for a reason.

On the surface, you might ask yourself why you’re afraid of success, but I’m sure you’ve succeeded in many different things before.

Most people don’t really fear success, they fear what success will bring.

Let me give you an example…

A woman (let’s call her Sarah), intellectually wants her business to be a huge success. She wants to help so many people and knows that she can be of service to so many, but yet, she stops herself from doing the things she needs to do. Subconsciously, she’s stopping herself because she knows that if she makes a great deal of money, it will allow her to make some difficult decisions. In Sarah’s case, it would allow her to move away from her family, something she’s wanted to do for a long time. However, Sarah is also very afraid to leave her family because she’s worried they’ll be upset, hurt, or think badly about her.

So her lack of success actually serves her.

It keeps her from having to make a difficult decision.

It enables her to avoid growth, which can be a little scary. Deep down she’s terrified of her family’s reaction if she is successful.

So, in your case, my suggestion is to really think about what you’d be able to do if you did finally step into your greatness. You must get to the bottom of the fear that’s causing you to stop, and then you must walk through that fear.

Sometimes this is really tough to see on your own. It’s difficult to see your blindspot, and that’s why working with a coach is so valuable. With the right questions, you can be led to the core of what’s causing you to stop.

Here’s my gift to you. If you’d like some help with this, my lead coach, Steph Tuss, would be happy to help you through it. Send an email to [email protected] and she’ll set up an appointment for the two of you to speak.

Blaming your competition?!?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Judy Katz. You can find her on the web at www.wealthtransformations.com

Question:

How can I break out of the pattern of being the best kept secret when it comes to my business? I fall back with the thought that so many people do what I do. How am I different, etc

Answer:

I’m going to cut right to the chase with this one…

The truth is that there is no such thing as competition.

There is only one YOU. There may be 5,000 different people who teach what you teach, sell what you sell, or provide what you provide, but there is only one Judy Katz! You bring your gift to the world through you, and there isn’t another you and so there cannot be competition!

AND

You’re using this excuse to stay hidden and small.

So the real question to answer would be; what are you afraid of that’s keeping you the best kept secret when it comes to your business?

I know that Spirit wants more for you than you want for yourself. Your purpose on this planet is NOT to stay hidden.

So, my question to you is…how is it serving you to stay small? Now, before you react, take a moment and really think about it.

What would happen if you really stepped into your purpose and became the huge success you know you would be?

Would it mean that your relationship with your friends or family would change?

Would it mean that you’d need to let go of something that you weren’t so sure you could let go of?

Would it mean that others may judge you?

You’re staying small for a reason, and it’s been a choice of yours to do so. The key to getting out of your own way is to become aware of what you are resisting. What are you not willing to do that’s keeping you stuck?

You also have to understand that if you continue to stay small, you are doing a disservice to those people who are looking for your help. Remember, if you have the desire, the way to fulfill it is waiting for you.

It just starts with a decision to get very honest with yourself about why you are choosing to stay hidden and then begin to walk right through those fears.

Once you become aware of your fears, you must bring the truth to it and TAKE ACTION!

Each day when you wake up, write down the 6 most important things that to be done that day to bring you closer to the goal.

Practice this every day.

It will take discipline, but it’s the most important habit you can develop as it will have a DIRECT impact on the success of your business.

.

Am I addicted to fear?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from an individual who wishes to remain anonymous.

Question:

Hi David! Thanks so much for this Saturday morning kick in the pants…

Here’s my question. Over the last year I have set goals, and for the most part, hit them. However, each time I reach a goal, I feel a new set of fears bearing down on me. I keep thinking that if I could just be successful enough or make enough money, the fears will go away and my life will be easy. Is this accurate thinking or am I a fear addict?

Answer:

Great question and congratulations on your growth and success!

What you’re experiencing is what I like to call “New level, new devil”.

Many people have a common misunderstanding that once they hit a certain point in their business; everything suddenly becomes a bed of roses.

The truth is that every time you change, adapt and grow, you experience fear. It’s a natural part of the process. Remember, your ego sees growth and change as a threat, and therefore creates the illusion of fear to keep you exactly where you are.

As an entrepreneur, you MUST get comfortable being uncomfortable.

So the MOST important thing to remember as you’re going through the terror barrier each time, is that whatever you focus on will grow.

If you give energy to the fear by trying to fight it or figure it out, you will manifest reasons to feel fearful. If you focus on the success, you will manifest opportunities to be successful.

Here’s your cheat sheet on coping with the fear.

When you feel yourself going to that dark place, instead of fighting it, which only gives energy to it, greet it like an old friend, and say, “Thanks fear, it’s nice to know you’ll always be there for me, but today I’m going to focus on something else (love, my successes, what I’m grateful for, etc).”

Pretty soon, the fear will take a back seat, and you’ll get so good at redirecting your thoughts, that the next time you feel the fear bubbling, all you have to do is think, “NEXT!”, and quickly move to a thought steeped in love or gratitude.

1)Fear is a lie.

and

2) Spirit NEVER speaks to you through fear.

When you begin to experience fear, become aware of what it really is.

A lie cannot hold up in the light of the truth.
