Will This Sales Advice Work for My Industry?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I’m in the network marketing industry. Many people have negative associations of MLMs, due to certain companies engaging in bad practices. My MLM doesn’t do that. I loved the product, and I’m like, “Yeah, I can do this.” But I feel like I have to tiptoe around this elegantly, not being too pushy on sales calls.

I’ve heard you say, “Stay on the phone with someone until they either give you their credit card number or hang up on you.” My heart dropped when I heard this. How do I come with power and certainty that I’ll close the sale—without coming across as aggressive? I feel like your advice works for everyone except my industry.

Neagle Code Answer

There’s a little truth to what you’re saying, because you have two different things in your industry. You have the product and you have the business.

If you’re a business builder in MLM, the idea is that you lead with the lifestyle; you lead with the vision. That’s a combination of the business and the product.

If you’re a product seller, then you’re coming more from a sales aspect. If you’re leading with the product, then you need to talk about: what problem or solution does the product provide? That’s more in the line with that teaching I gave you.  (That teaching isn’t in alignment with being a business builder in MLM.)

If you’re a business builder, you want to focus on transferring the vision. You’re helping people understand, “Here is a system that will allow you to live your life very differently.”

Sit down and talk to people about what they want, what vision they have for their life—and then show them how your company can help them get that.

It’s not so much about “Buy this, or get out of here.” It’s really about sitting down and building that vision together with them.

In the MLM I was in many years ago, we used to do it like this: You tell a story (i.e., your story), or you listen to a story. Where is the potential person coming from in their life? And then you build a story together.

If they don’t want to do that, don’t take it personally. Just move on to the next person.

In business and sales, there will always be more people who say “no” than who say “yes.”

You’re just looking for the “four aces in the deck” who want to build a fantastic lifestyle for themselves. That’s it. It’s actually pretty easy and a lot of fun to do.

Why Doesn’t it Stick?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Bob.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I listen to so many things and I attend so many seminars and webinars. But why is it that nothing seems to stick? I don’t have the life-changing experiences in my thinking, my attitude, and my vibrations that I’m looking for.

Neagle Code Answer

This is something that I see way too often. People believe that studying, listening to someone, reading books, and attending seminars will magically change their lives.

But unfortunately, it’s not that easy.

It’s not enough to just take in all that knowledge. What you must do is change the way you think.

Until you change the habitual way that you think, nothing changes.

What does this mean in practice?

It means that you must take the principles you learn from all those sources and think about how you can apply them to your daily life.

Everything that you learn needs to be applicable to everything you do every single day.

But it’s not just about how you think about all those principles…

It’s about how you think through them while applying them in your daily life.

I know this from my own experience.

Back in the early 90s, I used to listen to a whole bunch of speakers talking about how to become wealthy.

But listening to them alone didn’t bring any change to my life.

It wasn’t until I started asking some crucial questions that things began to shift.

“How do I control and raise my income?”

“What does it take to make a sale and give my income a boost?”

Once I answered these questions, along with a few more, my income went from $50,000 per year to $50,000 per month.

It all comes down to cause and effect.

Change doesn’t happen on its own and you can’t expect to evolve by merely absorbing knowledge.

Take what you learn, apply it to your life in a concrete way, and you’ll start seeing changes.

Overwhelmed with marketing?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Debbie.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I get overwhelmed with all the things I can and should do with marketing. How do I know what I should focus on and how do I determine my marketing needs?

Neagle Code Answer

Thanks for this question.

First, pick a plan or a system and work on mastering it.

Choose a marketing system or skill and stick with and master it. Test it. Follow through.

Second, the more you do it and stick to one plan, you will learn there’s a specific rhythm to marketing that you’ll start to embody.

If you're wrong, you can switch when you find out you're wrong, but you've got to stick to something and learn to build upon that.

Let the results tell you.

The results should tell you if you're on track or not. Don’t get emotional about marketing. It’s very results driven.

See what the results are and that's how you make decisions.

How to teach children to express emotions

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

How do we model what we're learning and teach children to express emotions … even when we feel like we don’t have time to deal with their “big feelings”?

Neagle Code Answer

Thanks for this question.

First, help your children understand what they're experiencing.

Remember, it's a whole new world for them. They don't know why they're experiencing what they're experiencing.

The best thing to do is for you to withdraw your big feelings in the moment and get yourself centered before you address them.

Help them understand what they're experiencing and show them an alternate way of expressing their emotions.

When you say, “Don't do that,” or “Put your feelings away,” they don't know how to do that.

Managing emotions is a skill that takes a better part of 30 years for most people to figure out and that’s IF they're diligent with it.

You need to withdraw yourself first. Calm yourself down and then say, “How do I need to address somebody that's five?”

One of the best things that you can do is research and learn how to influence your children, so they WANT to do something and feel as if it’s their choice.

Don’t let fear tell you that you aren’t enough.

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Julie.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I’m always worried that I’m not doing enough, learning enough, or taking enough action. How do I stop these self-sabotaging thoughts?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question.

This sounds like a voice of “I'm not enough” that's creeping up for you.

You need to just ignore that voice, and repeat (out loud and over and over):

“I'm enough. I'm enough”.

Then the first step in setting a goal is to determine what needs to be done to achieve the goal.

There are things that we know we need to do… and then there are things that we don't know that we need to do.  As we move toward the goal, we’ll get clearer on EVERYTHING that needs to be done.

It might be required that we learn a new skill or improve upon a strategy we’ve tried in the past.

But the key is to let the goal drive your decision-making process, not the voice in your mind.

If the goal requires you to do more, than do more.

If the goal requires you to learn more, than learn more.

Do only what needs to be done today the best that you possibly can.

Stay present and let the goal dictate your activity.

The 2 Keys to Becoming an Elite Entrepreneur

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

What are a few things that you would say encompass someone who has an elite entrepreneurial mind? In other words, what can I do to become an Elite Entrepreneur?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question!

When we boil everything down to the basics, there are 2 key things that are a part of EVERY elite entrepreneur’s life.

  1. Always strive to better your best.

This means striving to always show up as a better version of yourself. And it also means that you learn from everything you do, so that you can constantly do better the next time.

When you better your best you're going to see what you're doing, what's working and what's not working. And you’ll constantly be asking the questions:

  • How do we do it better next time?
  • How can I respond better next time?
  • How could I be a better leader next time?
  1. Always do what you say you're going to do.

This means always being your word. It’s about commitment. If you break your word, you lose trust with yourself. If you lose trust with yourself, suddenly you suffer from a lack of confidence, which bleeds into everything you do.

Do not EVER say that you’re going to do something that you don’t intend to do.

And trust me this seems very simple on the surface, but I challenge you to really think about all the times you break your word to yourself on a daily basis. It’s so so harmful.

If you make these two things a habit, they will affect everything else. They will positively impact everything you do and anyone you work alongside.

How to Change Your Thoughts

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David!

I’ve heard you teach that the image you hold in your mind, is the result you will receive. How do you change the images in your mind in order to get the results you want?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question, and one that I hear often.

The simple answer is:

You have to build a new image of what you want, and then take action every day until it is achieved.

You can’t simply meditate or visualize what you want.

You have to realize you aren’t just creating a new image, you are replacing an old one.

When you start to apply the action to the new image and you start to see results, that is when you know you are programming your mind all the way through.

It’s image, emotion, action and result.

You can’t just do one or some of these, each component is required in order to make a change.

When you take action and get a new result, you know you have truly let go of the old belief and created the new one.

Without the action, part of your mind just knows it isn’t real and will keep reinforcing the old programming.

Every day write down:

  • Your purpose.
  • Your goal.

And then ask yourself, “Who do I need to be today to create this right now?”

It takes real commitment to say:

“I am abandoning the person I was, and I am going to recreate a new me.”

You have to take it seriously and not waiver. The second you start to waiver, you instantly go back to the old behavior.

Lost? Find yourself by doing THIS

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

David… I HATE when someone asks me what I want. My brain literally goes blank when faced with that question. I have tried everything to get a clear picture of what I want and where I want to go, and all I see in my mind is static. Is there something I can do to help me get clear?

Neagle Code Answer

Thanks for the fantastic question!

Most people don’t spend enough time looking deeply at their own life.

Here’s what I suggest:

Take an entire day, and go sit in nature where it’s quiet.

(If you’re in a big city, and can’t find a quiet place… get everyone out of your house for the day, and spend the entire day just sitting alone).

Get yourself a notepad, pen, or pencil. (Don’t use the computer for this exercise.) Something magical happens when we put pen to paper.

Just sit there.

…And start writing whatever comes into your mind.

It doesn’t matter how crazy or off topic it seems… write it all down.

I’d suggest giving yourself a full 12 hours to do this exercise. Start early in the morning, maybe after you’ve showered. (The shower is more metaphorical than anything else. It’s like you’re cleansing yourself and your mind.)

Prepare yourself a cup of tea, coffee, fresh greens, or whatever you like. (No alcohol.)

Sit down, and be quiet. Be present. Pay attention to whatever is running through your mind. As different ideas and topics go through your mind, write them all down.

As you do this, you’ll begin to find a sense of “order” coming into your mind.

Your thoughts will become more orderly and clearer. They’ll become more directed.

Once you get the most “common” thoughts out of your head and on to the pape… you’ll find that new thoughts start coming to the surface… thoughts you’ve never had before.

You can ask yourself a question.

You could ask your subconscious mind, “Please show me what I want to do in life.” “Show me what my next goal is.” “What do I really desire?”

“Reveal to me what I want most. What do I want to be, do, or have?”

You could even drawn three columns on the page:

“Be” in the first column.
“Do” in the second column.
“Have” in the third column.

Write down anything that comes to mind in each column.

Eventually, you’ll start coming up with things that inspire you, things that bring you freedom, joy, happiness, and excitement.

As you write those things down, you’ll open the door for more of that “road” to reveal itself to you.

Lost in my own business

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

I have my own business. After years of struggling, I’ve been able to live off my work, but never in a sustainable, recurrent way. I’m burned out. This year has been terrible. I feel like not doing anything anymore, and I’m lost. I have an email list, but they’re not very responsive.

I’m in a position where I need to bring in money… and I’m stuck. My mind keeps thinking, “How do I bring in money?” I get paralyzed in analysis.

What can I do, or launch, to turn this around?

Neagle Code Answer

The best thing you can do… is to do the thing that touches your heart the most.

Don’t think about the money. Don’t think about the fear. Instead, do the thing that brings you the most joy.

Doing the thing that brings you joy will bring the highest level of service to other people. AND it will bring you money.

…But nothing will happen if you just sit there in your fear all day.

It’s time to get serious. It’s time to say to yourself, “Listen, I’m not going to tolerate this fear running my life anymore. I’m better than this. I can make a difference in people’s lives.”

You have to make a difference in your own life first. THEN you can make a difference in other people’s lives.

…But you owe it to yourself to do what makes you happy.

Scattered and Sucked Dry

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David! Here’s my question…

I feel like I’m being pulled in a hundred different directions. I’m a mom, a business owner with employees, a wife, a daughter, a neighbor, a church member, and I’m starting to feel like I’m losing touch with who I am outside of those roles. I wake up and go through the motions, making sure everyone is taken care of, but at the end of the day, I honestly feel sucked dry.

It’s beginning to scare me because it’s getting harder and harder to see where my business needs to go, and I’m actually starting to resent it. I’ve lost the spark I once had. How do I get that back, and still be the best version of myself?

Neagle Code Answer

Thanks for the great questions!

I think a lot of us are really raised with the idea that putting ourselves first is not really a good thing. And while I understand that sometimes putting everyone else before yourself can be a kind or generous thing, the hard truth of the matter is that if we don't put ourselves first in our mind as far as our own health, our own well-being, our own growth, then anything that we actually bring to the table for other people is kind of half-hearted and only at half-capacity.

One of the things that I like to teach people is put yourself first in your own life.

I know some of you might be thinking, “Well, that sounds kind of selfish David.” So let me explain…

When you put yourself first, you actually become the center of your life, not from an egotistical perspective, but from the perspective of:

  1. you have a specific purpose for being here,
  2. it's your responsibility to develop that purpose so that you can not only be a benefit to yourself, but you can be a benefit to other people, and
  3. that you have the ability to take care of your own needs so that you can help other people with their needs.

So let me ask you…

What are you doing that you really DON’T want to be doing?

If you look at all the roles you listed in your question and you make a list under each one of all the things you do, that you actually don’t want to do, how long would that list be?

And the next question for you is:

WHY are you doing these things? What are the excuses you tell yourself to keep yourself from living the life you REALLY want to live?

Are you:

  • Afraid to rock the boat?
  • Worried people will think you’re a bad person?
  • Concerned you’ll be perceived as greedy, selfish or lazy?
  • Controlled by guilt or shame?

The truth is that you’re holding yourself in this place because of a deep inner conflict…and you’re right, it’s sucking you dry.

Here’s how I can help you further with this…on Tuesday at 1pm ET, I’m hosting a FREE training that I’ve titled: How To Live Life on Your Own Terms. Join me, and I’ll share with you a process to help you start to turn this situation around and fall back in love with your life. CLICK HERE for all the details.
