Trusting others with your business

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I know that it takes a team to build the business that I want to grow, but I really struggle with trust. How much trust should I put into others? Or is it ALL on me?

Thanks!

Neagle Code Answer

Hi and thanks for the question.

The concept of trust is interesting, and the more I speak to entrepreneurs, the more I see how their lack of understanding of trust leads to sabotage.

You see,
trust MUST be earned.

To trust blindly in others is sheer ignorance.

Let me explain.

When you are building a team, you have to be a leader.

A good leader interviews and screens potential hires carefully and strategically.

A good leader ALWAYS checks references.

After the hire is made, the leader gives the new team member opportunities to earn the leader’s trust until they have proven to be trustworthy.

This is your business, it’s your responsibility, and I see so many entrepreneurs hand over the keys to their business to people who have not demonstrated that they can be trusted.

Do your part to make sure the team members you are bringing into your business are a good fit, and be willing to give them opportunities to showcase their gifts and earn your trust at the same time.

How to know when to trust

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David!

I'm trying to repair damage with a friend. I have forgiven them and moved past the hurt, but I don't trust them. Is this negative? Is this holding me back from moving forward?

Neagle Code Answer

People must earn your trust.

It is not something that you give freely.

Whether we are talking about your family, friends, or employees, to trust people blindly and implicitly is never a good decision, especially if they’ve shown you that they cannot be trusted.

If someone has not earned your trust, or has broken your trust in the past, you can love them for who they are, but ultimately you have to make a decision about whether or not you want to spend time with them and share your life with them.

The only way your friend can hold you back is if you make decisions based on what they think, rather than what you want.

If you find yourself caring more about what someone else thinks than what you think, you are holding yourself back.

Lastly, I want you to understand that if someone has broken your trust, chances are you’ve done the same thing to someone else and this situation is simply a mirror for you.

Remember you attract everything in your life from a place of who you are being, and to not take responsibility for part of the situation will only keep it alive and painful.

If you can see the truth in what happened, it will set you free.

How to handle family members who have broken your trust

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I could really use your help with something. With the Holidays being in full swing, I know that I’m going to have to spend time with a family member who has done something hurtful to me this past year that proved to be very untrustworthy. I’m over the hurt (I think), but I do not trust them, and really don’t want to BE with them. I don’t want our brief time spent together to negatively affect my business. Do you have any suggestions?

Can I trust my team members?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Isaiah.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I know that to grow my business I need to develop a team. I’ve never hired anyone before, and I’m really worried about trusting people with a business I’ve worked so hard to build. How much do I trust a team?

Neagle Code Answer

Hi Isaiah, and thanks for the question.

The concept of trust is interesting, and the more I speak to entrepreneurs, the more I see how their lack of understanding of trust leads to sabotage.

It’s one of the reasons I’ll be teaching on this topic in my new Live and Let Live Virtual Training. Trust is a huge issue because it’s not actually taught to the majority of us…especially those of us who grew up in the Middle Class.

You see, trust MUST be earned.

To trust blindly in others is sheer ignorance.

Let me explain.

When you are building a team, you have to assume the role of leader.

Will spending time with negative family members deter my growth?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Mandy B.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I loved your last post about relationships, and could really use your help with something. With the Holidays being in full swing, I know that I’m going to have to spend time with a family member that I’ve had a less than pleasant experience with this year. I’m over the hurt, but I do not trust them. I don’t want seeing them to send me in a tailspin…is this lack of trust going to deter my success after the holidays?

Neagle Code Answer

Hi Mandy!

If someone has not earned your trust, or has broken your trust in the past, you can love them for who they are, but ultimately you have to make a decision about whether or not you want to spend time with them and share your life with them.

Trust should ALWAYS be earned.

As I wrote last week, the only way your family member can hold you back is if you make decisions based on what they think, rather than what you want.

If you find yourself caring more about what someone else thinks rather than what you think, you are holding yourself back.

But here is the most important lesson for you:

How to Set Goals and Follow Through (Every Time)

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions
for Life”
comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

David,

Can you please explain how you break the pattern of not following through for yourself? I don’t trust myself, and feel completely deflated when setting goals because I’ve failed so many times.

Thanks so much!

Neagle Code Answer

Thanks for the question!

I’m going to skip trying to understand why you’re sabotaging yourself and skip right to the solution.

If you’re really committed to changing this, do exactly as I tell you below and sooner rather than later you’ll be on your way to success!

First, start with DAILY goals.

That’s right. We’re not talking about 6 and 12-month goals right now, we’re going to start small and build to strengthen your self-confidence muscle over time.

Tonight before you go to bed, take out your notebook and pen and right down THREE things you MUST accomplish before you go to bed tomorrow.

I recommend that these be income generating “things”, but it’s ultimately up to you.

When you wake up tomorrow, put that list in front of you, and DO NOT GO TO BED THAT NIGHT until all 3 of those items are completed.

Do the same thing tomorrow night. Write down three ”things” you need to accomplish the next day, and the next day, don’t go to sleep until all 3 things are accomplished.

Setting these small, yet important, goals are small stair steps to your bigger goal and to developing the discipline and trust within yourself to succeed in whatever you put your mind to.

Once you master the daily goals, begin setting weekly goals on top of your daily goals!

You’ll gain momentum quickly and break the pattern of not following through.
