How do I find the right people for my team?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Neagle Code Question

How do I find the right people to hire for my team? Iโ€™m currently feeling incredibly frustrated with the process AND the people!

Neagle Code Answer

Thanks for the great question!

When doing ANY hiring, you always need to first start with yourself:

โ€ข Are you the right person to do the hiring? Be honest.
โ€ข Do you have a poor track record of turnover within your business?

Businesses lose money every time they have to fire and hire, so at times, itโ€™s often less time consuming and more cost effective to turn to a professional to assist you in hiring.

They are skilled at not only knowing what questions to ask you to make sure you attract qualified people, but also what questions to ask the potential employee.

An outside service can be more objective and know how to โ€œread between the linesโ€ in an interview so that only qualified people who will match your culture make the cut.

If you feel like you are the person to do the hiring, sit down and make a list of all the qualities and skills youโ€™re looking for in the โ€œrightโ€ person.

Be specific. When hiring you want to be able to clearly explain both โ€œdutiesโ€ and expectations.

If you find that you are still having difficulty finding the right person to fill a role in the company, you may need to take a long hard look at why you are attracting the situation:

โ€ข Are you keeping yourself the bottleneck in your company so as to stay hidden or not have to take risks to grow?
โ€ข Do you have issues with trusting someone else to do a job that you know you can do well

Remember, everything starts with you, so the more clear and honest you can be with yourself and others, the easier that position will be to fill.

Hiring advice to grow a successful team

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions for Life” comes from Malcolm.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David!

The good news about me is that Iโ€™m really ready to grow my team. The bad news is that I donโ€™t have much experience hiring, and the hires Iโ€™ve made in the pastโ€ฆwellโ€ฆletโ€™s just say they havenโ€™t been the best hires. Do you have any guidelines on hiring or advice you could share with me as I grow my team?

Thanks much!

Neagle Code Answer

Congrats on your decision to grow and thanks for the great question!

When doing ANY hiring, you always need to first start with yourself.

Are you the right person to do the hiring? Be honest.

Do you have a poor track record of turn over within your business?

Businesses lose money every time they have to fire and hire, so at times, itโ€™s often less time consuming and more cost effective to turn to a professional to assist you in hiring.

Most people donโ€™t even realize this is an option.

An outside hiring service is skilled at not only knowing what questions to ask you to make sure you attract qualified people, but also what questions to ask the potential employee.

They can be more objective and know how to โ€œread between the linesโ€ in an interview so that only qualified people who will match your culture make the cut.

If you feel like you are the person to do the hiring, sit down and make a list of all the qualities and skills youโ€™re looking for in the โ€œrightโ€ person.

Be specific. When hiring you want to be able to clearly explain both duties and expectations.

I once had the honor of having my friend Tony Hsieh of Zappos.com speak from my stage and he always encourages people to hire slow and fire fast.

I couldnโ€™t agree more.

If you find that you are still having difficulty finding the right person to fill a role in your company, you may need to take a long hard look at why you are attracting the situation.

Are you keeping yourself the bottleneck in your company so you feel important?

Do you have issues with trusting someone else to do a job that you know you can do well?

Remember, everything starts with you, so the more clear and honest you can be with yourself and others, the easier that position will be to fill.

I’m exhausted…

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions
for Life”
comes from Marcie Bjorn
.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question!

I am a solopreneur. My business is finally really taking off, and Iโ€™m exhausted. I know I need to hire help, but Iโ€™m not sure where to start. Can you help me get clear on my next step in hiring a team?

Neagle Code Answer

Hi Marcie and thanks for your question!

Generally a first hire for a solopreneur is an assistant.

Iโ€™m guessing that you are doing things that YOU donโ€™t need to be doing, and eventually itโ€™s going to affect your ability to grow and expand.

Hereโ€™s a little bit of homework for you:

Over the next 7 days keep a notebook by your desk, and as you go through your day, write down all the things that you do, that someone else can be doing for you.

This for both your personal life and your business life.

If you make a dentist appointment, write it down, because YOU donโ€™t have to be the one making that appointment.

If you are researching something, write it down because YOU donโ€™t have to be the person doing the research.

I think youโ€™ll be shocked how much time you spend doing the menial things in your business.

And if youโ€™re spending time on those things, youโ€™re NOT spending as much time as you can on income generating tasks, which means youโ€™re probably leaving thousands of dollars on the table.

Once you have your list created, youโ€™ll be able to create a job description, and hire and train the appropriate person who is qualified to assist you.

Not only will you feel more relaxed in your business, youโ€™ll also experience an increase in your income!
