The Art of Success – Article #8 – Playing the blame game?

Playing the blame game?

We live in a society that’s steeped in blame.

Had a bad day? Blame your boss. Bad mood? Blame your spouse. Feeling irritated? Blame the guy who cut you off in traffic.

It’s considered “normal” to blame.

As a life strategy, this may have worked for you as a kid. (“It’s Johnny or Mary’s fault all the cookies are gone!”)…and you may have gotten away with it.

…But blaming doesn’t have any place in your adult life. Not if you want to create a magnificent life.

It simply reinforces the idea that you’re a “victim” of your circumstances (which is not true).

Blaming is one of the most disempowering things you could ever do, because it implies that someone else is responsible for your results.

…which brings me to today’s question: Who exactly is responsible for your thoughts?

As adults, we’re responsible for what we turn over to our subconscious mind. However, we were NOT responsible for what was placed in our subconscious minds as small children.

Prior to the age of 7, we had no conscious mind developed. As children, we had no ability to question, analyze, or reject an idea. We accepted everything we were exposed, and those thoughts, ideas and experiences became fixed in there (like water pouring into an open fishbowl).

All those ideas, emotions, opinions, experiences, and evaluations of life eventually became the raw materials for your current belief system.

As you grew up, that belief system began to express itself in the way you thought, acted, and carried yourself…well into your adult life.

Here’s the kicker: Something you could not reject at age 4 could still be running your life today, and you may not even be aware of it.

So, who’s responsible for what’s currently in your subconscious mind today?

Really think about that.

You can’t change history. However, you now have a conscious mind, which means you’re free to reject thoughts that no longer serve you.

It’s now YOUR responsibility to examine your beliefs and ideas and decide what can stay and what must go.

The Art of Success – Article #7 – Get out of my brain!

Get out of my brain!

Did you know that the conscious mind and the subconscious mind are two very different things?

Both interact with your body in different way, and they impact your actions in different ways as well.

Let me explain…

Our conscious mind has the ability to choose and reason. It’s where our free will lies. Anything that comes into our conscious awareness, we can choose to accept or reject.

The subconscious mind, however, is very different. Anything that goes into the subconscious mind sticks. It stays there. It becomes fixed there. The subconscious mind has no ability to reject anything. When an idea gets fixed there, the only thing it can do is express itself through your physical body — through feelings and actions.

…That’s why it’s a good idea to make sure you’re monitoring what you’re allowing into your subconscious mind!

If you’re not paying attention, negative and unsupportive ideas can easily slip in and negatively affect your results.

In a simple conversation, someone else’s negative idea can slip in and start to affect your thinking and behaviors — if you don’t consciously reject the idea.

Here’s the good news…

We don’t have to
automatically accept the
things we hear.

You can simply say, “No, that’s not for me. I’m choosing something better.”

Or if you’re in conversation, you can simple say, “I understand that’s your perception or experience, but I don’t agree.”

Remember, the conscious mind has the power to accept or reject any thought.

The subconscious mind has no choice but to act upon whatever is given to it.

So always be conscientious of what’s being placed into your subconscious mind.

The Art of Success – Article #6 – Infinite Potential…REALLY?

Infinite Potential…REALLY?

Regardless of what your spiritual or religious upbringing was, or what your current beliefs are about the Universe, there’s one Universal Truth that applies to all human beings:

We are spiritual beings living in a physical body.

This is important to understand, because any time we’re working with spirit — i.e., working with Universal Energy — we’re dealing with infinite potential.

Spirit is infinite. The Universe is infinite. (Just look up at the night sky, or at the abundance of nature, and this becomes obvious.)

And because you were made in the image of Spirit, this means you’re also infinite. More specifically, you have infinite potential.

Really think about this.

Do you believe you
have infinite potential?

Most people were never taught this truth. Instead, they were bombarded with talk of limitations and reasons why they “can’t” succeed or do something. In fact, most of society has been hypnotized into believing they’re powerless.

This belief hinders what you can experience in life. It’s like placing yourself in an invisible “jail cell” that you carry around with you.

The truth is that all human beings have infinite potential, regardless of where they came from, or what they were taught as kids.

Just by virtue of being a spiritual being, you have infinite potential. You can create so much, it would blow your mind.

But very few of us actually tap into our potential, and put it to practical use in our lives.

If all of us became fully aware of this magnificent truth…we’d see that what we can do is absolutely astounding. My job, of course, is to get that message across to you, so that you can apply it in your life.

What stops you from believing you have infinite potential?

What stories or “lies
were you told that had
you believe in limitations?

Are you ready to step into the truth of who you REALLY are? — an infinite, powerful human being who can create magnificent things in your own life?

The Art of Success – Article #5 – Are You Responsible?

Are You Responsible?

Last week I wrote about we were born to be creators.

You create everything in your life, whether you’re aware of it or not.

Another key to success is to take 100% responsibility for EVERYTHING you create in your life…the good, the bad, the ugly, all of it. Otherwise, you’re a “victim.”

Do you take full responsibility for everything you create in your life?

Think about this carefully. How you answer this question shows you your level of awareness, and your ability to create what you want (as opposed to what you don’t want).

An “unaware” person generally doesn’t take responsibility for everything in their life.

Ask them what they’re unhappy about, and they’ll have a laundry list of complaints. They’ll most likely blame something (or someone) for their undesired experiences. Or they’ll make excuses and shift responsibility to something outside of themselves.

This can be obvious — like saying, “It’s so-and-so’s fault that XYZ happened to me.”

Or it can be more subtle, like “If the weather’s bad I won’t follow through on my commitment.” (In which case, you’re pre-blaming any bad weather in advance for your lack of follow-through.)

When you’re blaming, you’re not taking full responsibility for your life. Period.

From that stance, you’re a victim. As a victim, you can’t proactively change anything in your life, let alone create what you want.

Here’s the truth:

Everything that’s currently in your life…
you put there.

Whether consciously or subconsciously…
you put it there.

It’s your life, after all.

Maybe you didn’t mean to put something there, and it showed up anyway. Great. How you choose to react to it will determine your experience.

If you don’t love a situation in your life, how can you change it?

My favorite question to ask in such cases is:

“Why am I choosing to have this experience/result/outcome?” (A victim would never ask that. They’d be too busy blaming and fuming about their results.)

Asking this question instantly puts you back in the driver’s seat of your own life.

If you’re willing to accept 100% responsibility for everything you’re creating, you can make phenomenal changes in your life.

Doors will open wide for you. It will seem like “magic,” but it’s really just one of the key elements of being a successful person.

That includes taking responsibility for every thought, feeling, and action you take.

The Art of Success – Article #4 – You Have The POWER

You Have The POWER

As I stated last week you are a spiritual being living in a physical body, and you can create whatever you want. In fact, your entire life is a creation…from the food you eat for breakfast; to the way you adjust your chair.

Your life can be a beautiful work of art.

It can be as “beautiful” or as “ugly” as you want it to be. Either way, you’re creating it.

Most people don’t even realize they have the power to create anything. They simply go through life responding and reacting to whatever happens to them, often feeling like a victim of their own creations.

There’s not much joy or fulfillment in that way of living.

Part of the problem is that people don’t realize they’re creating their experience.

Plato said, “Life should be lived as play.”

What does it mean to “play”?
Play means you enjoy what you’re doing. It’s simple. We should be enjoying our creations.

Every day, we’re creating — whether it’s our business, our work, our relationships, a hobby, or anything else.

Given that we’re magnificent beings, we should create the way we want to live, spending our days with people we love, doing things we love to do, and earning whatever amount of money we desire to earn.

We have that power.

It’s really a great “trip” once you figure out how to live that way.

Then it’s simply a matter of adjusting your creations, until you love them.

(If you’re not enjoying it…how can you create something different?)

The first step is to know what you want to create.

See it in your mind, and imagine it in vivid detail.

How would you like to spend your days? What would you like to do? What’s deep in your soul that’s calling to you? What are you curious about? What would you love to explore?

Imagine filling your life with things you love, and losing all track of time because you’re so in love and so passionate about what you’re doing.

The successful person knows what they want, and they dare to create it.

What are you going to create today?

The Art of Success – Article #3 – Success Is Your Birthright

Success Is Your Birthright

Last time I told you that making three changes to my attitude tripled my income in less than 12 months. Those changes were:

1. I’m going to act as though I love what I’m doing.

2. I’m going to treat everybody with total respect.

3. I’m going to do every job to the best of my ability.

I tripled my income from $20,000 to $60,000, which was phenomenal at the time, but then I got stuck. I couldn’t manage to get to $80,000.

Then one day my mentor, Bob Proctor, asked me if I would like to turn my annual income of $60,000 into a monthly income?

Of course I would!

He said with full assurance, “You can do that.”

I had never considered that idea before, and the more I played with it, the more I realized that it might be possible for me, but I still didn’t know how it was going to happen.

Then one day he said, “It’s actually easier to earn $60,000 a month than it is to earn $60,000 a year.”

It was like he lit a candle in a dark room. In that moment I became aware of something that I was never aware of before: earning money is one of the easiest things in the world to do.

And because of that shift in my awareness, within 11 months again, I turned that annual income into my monthly income, and then soon thereafter took it to more than $100,000 a month.

Your Biggest Block Around Money Might Surprise You
If you are struggling to earn the income that you desire, you have to ask yourself why.

Quite likely, the reason is one I touched on in the first article of this series.

One of the biggest blocks that people have around money, business, relationships or anything they want is that they think they have to go out and get it because they don’t have it.

That idea keeps people working in the wrong place sometimes for their entire life.

As they look outward for what they want, struggle comes into the equation. Struggle without solution leads to frustration and loss of hope, and eventually to giving up.

I’ve said this before, and I’m going to say it again, the success that you want is not out there in some unattainable place, it’s inside you.

You can have, do or be anything you want.

In fact, for all practical purposes, human potential is infinite.

In order to grasp this concept, you need to understand the significance of what and who you are.

1. First and foremost, you are a spiritual being.
When you’re working with spirit and universal energy, you’re working with infinite potential. If you became aware of how to use that potential and the gifts it could bring, your mind would be absolutely blown.

2. You live in a physical body.
Very few of us are tapping into our infinite potential and putting it to practical use in our lives. You should be doing the things that you love to do, earning whatever amount of money you desire, and spending your time with people you love.

3. You are gifted with intellect.
Humans are the highest life form on Earth that we know about. You have the ability to think, reason, ask questions and evaluate.

4. You have emotions.
The way that you choose to think about things in your life governs your emotional state. Too often people are led around by their emotions. You want to bring order to your understanding, which will remove confusion, and then you can make new choices and do something different with your life.

Listen, success is your birthright.

Your life is meant to be abundant, prosperous, healthy, full of love and friends, and absolutely amazing.

It really is.

And it’s all in you waiting to be realized.

So let me light that candle in the dark spaces of your mind, so that you can begin to see how truly brilliant and worthy you are.

The Art of Success – Article #2 – One Mental Shift Tripled My Income

One Mental Shift
Tripled My Income

Last week I told you that you can double, triple, or even quadruple your income, and it doesn’t have to take a long time or be difficult.

In fact, one simple mental shift tripled my income.

I was a high school dropout and, at the time, was married with two children and working six-and-a-half days a week, driving a forklift on a dock, to earn about $20,000 a year.

I was so frustrated I wanted to scream. I didn’t like myself or virtually anybody else.

But there was a seed of desire in me—just as there is in everybody—and I began to ask myself what I wanted.

I decided that I wanted a boat, a house, a car, and to earn $40,000 a year. That was it. Those were the only things that I thought I could get.

Then one day, I was in a water-skiing accident that broke my back and almost took my life.

It was an enormous wake-up call for me that one day I could be living my life, and then bang, like flipping a light switch, I could be gone.

As I lay at home recovering, I started asking myself why I was here and what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

I thought that God would reward me with a great opportunity, but nothing changed. About a month after my accident, I was back on the dock, absolutely miserable again.

Then one brutally cold February night in Chicago, about 2:20 a.m., I was still working, and nothing was going right. I was exhausted and at my wit’s end, when a voice inside my head said, “David, change your attitude.” It was so clear it was almost audible.

Could it be that simple? I wondered. Could a small change in my thinking make a big shift in my external results?

I started to play with this idea, and began to study the owner of the company where I worked. This guy had a million-dollar company and a great attitude, and yet we came from the same lower-middle-class background. Not only that, but when he started the business in his garage, he was doing the same job that I was currently doing.

I decided then and there that I would commit to making three attitude adjustments in myself, and practice these for 12 months and see what happens.

Those three changes were:

1. I was going to act as though I loved what I was doing. I hated my job, but since my boss used to do it, I decided that he must have liked it on some level, so I would find a way to like it as well.

2. I would treat people with total respect. This is how he treated everybody, while up to this point I was resentful, bitter and hurt.

3. I would do every job to the best of my ability. The owner had built good business relationships, so I surmised that he must have put a lot of care into his work. At that point, I was not operating by that idea. If something broke, I didn’t care. So I decided to follow his model in this as well.

Because I wanted something different, I was willing to do something different.

Without going back to school or taking any lessons or even reading any books, in less than a year, I was making $60,000.

All I did was shift what was going on inside my head, and my income tripled.

Can the same thing happen for you? Absolutely!

And whether you’re making $20,000 or $500,000 the lesson is the same.

You can have so much more than you can even imagine.

And, as I’ll tell you next week, you ARE so much more than you even know.

The Art of Success – Article #1 – These Misconceptions Might Be Keeping You Stuck

These Misconceptions Might Be Keeping You Stuck

What two words can sink your success faster than anything else?

“I know.”

You probably grew up with the idea that if you read some information and can recite it back, then it’s something that you “know” and are able to apply to your life.

When it comes to the success that you want, nothing could be further from the truth.

If you want to be successful, you have to understand success.

What’s the difference?

Understanding is not just intellectual; it’s experiential.

When you understand something you’ve gotten to the heart of it and felt it from the inside out. The teaching is a part of you then, and you can apply it with ease and start seeing results.

Because the truth is, if you’re not getting the results that you want in your life, there’s something that you don’t understand. That’s all it is.

And that’s why I’m starting this series by correcting a pair of common misconceptions that might be keeping you stuck or in a constant state of struggle and frustration.

Common Misconception #1: Success is a future destination.
People usually view success as something to be achieved or a place to get to. They think it’s “out there” somewhere, and they strive and struggle to reach this unattainable place.

As you’ll begin to understand if you follow this series, success is not out there. It’s not something that you go out and get. It’s something that you discover in YOU.

Common Misconception #2: Success is a product of luck.
I was raised in a lower-middle-class dysfunctional family, where I was taught to believe that a loving God created us, and yet people lived in poverty and were sick, and they had terrible relationships. They were stuck and couldn’t figure out why.

Meanwhile, other people owned businesses. Some of these were entrepreneurs with a very strong work ethic, and yet, they also were stuck. While others, like a rocket ship, were very successful.

People in my neighborhood pointed at those successful people and said, “They are lucky.”

When I tripled my income in less than 12 months, that’s one of the things they said about me.

I’ll tell you all about it next week, but my rapid rise in income had absolutely nothing to do with luck.

Success has nothing to do with luck.

In fact, I don’t even believe in the concept of luck. And if you want to be successful, I suggest that you immediately delete that word from your vocabulary.

If success doesn’t have anything to do with luck, how does it come about?

As I just said, you discover it within yourself—and you do that through a very orderly process that bridges the gap between where you are and where you want to go.

I’m going to share that exact process with you in weekly installments over the next several months.

You really can double, triple, or even quadruple your income, and it doesn’t have to take a long time or be difficult.

So check back here next week to begin to understand how you can create the prosperous, abundant life of your dreams.
