Why I don’t talk about branding…

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions
for Life”
comes from Madeline T.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David.

I notice you don't spend a lot of time talking about the importance of branding. Yet, when I go to events, there's always someone telling me that branding is REALLY important. I'm currently in the beginning stages of my own business, and haven't yet made money. Should branding be something I invest in prior to really making money?

Neagle Code Answer

Good question!

The most important thing you need to know, especially at the beginning stages of a new business startup, is that the only thing that REALLY moves money is sales.

The best marketing strategy for any business startup is identifying your target market, finding opportunities to get in front of them and having sales conversations that identify you as the expert and someone who can help solve a specific problem.

Many businesses make the mistake of investing in branding upfront without any clear idea or direction of their market because they haven’t sold to anyone yet. They think this is the driving force behind making sales.

Initially you are the best marketing tool for your business. By unearthing who wants to buy and by you engaging in sales conversations, you will activate buyers.

After you have gained some successful momentum in sales, you will get clear about, “This is what I am. This is why I exist. If you like me, you can buy me, support me, and recommend me to your friends.” That is the time to start thinking and investing in branding.

A good marketing campaign can push out your message, and a good brand identity can pull them in, but the bottom line is:

Sales is the most important activity behind any successful business, and it is often the most overlooked.

How do I find my real purpose?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions
for Life”
comes from Amanda.

Neagle Code Question

I understand about purpose, do what you love and the money will follow but I don't have a clue what I should be doing. How do I find my purpose?

Neagle Code Answer

Amanda, thank you for the question.

Finding your purpose comes from knowing who you truly are and what you desire. Your purpose is already within you and it isn’t something you look for outside yourself.

I’m sure you’ve heard my story about my boating accident where I almost died after being sucked into a dam. When I was hanging onto a tree branch for dear life, I made a promise to God that I would figure out why I hadn’t been able to do the things that I knew I should have been doing. And then do them.

Right after the accident, nothing happened. God didn’t tell me what to do. After much frustration, I realized God wasn’t going to tell me what to do. I had to make that decision myself. I started by asking myself, “What am I going to do with the rest of my life?”

At first I didn’t know the answer. I kept asking myself the question and then answers began to come forward. The first three answers I received and acted upon were to:

1. Change my attitude

2. Treat everyone with total respect

3. Do everything to the best of my ability.

Now, this didn’t immediately give me the answer to my life purpose. It did help me to change and to raise my awareness. Whenever we raise our awareness, we discover more of who we truly are. The more we know who we truly are, the more answers we’re given about our unique gifts we have to share with the world.

The key here, Amanda, is to continue to ask yourself conscious questions to raise your awareness of who you are. Everyday, ask yourself, “What am I going to do with the rest of my life?” and “What do I really want?”

Just as I did and continue to do, follow the answers you are given as if they were bread crumbs creating a path and you will find yourself living your “purpose.”

Trouble finding NEW clients?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions

comes from Calvin Roe.

Neagle Code Question

Hello David!

Hello David! I am a great coach. People tell me all the time that I can really help them dig into what's keeping them from living the life they want. My problem lies in wanting to really grow my business. I have a small practice currently, and am having trouble finding new clients. Other coaches keep telling me that to grow my business, I have to have a specific niche. Is that true?

Thanks for your insight!

Neagle Code Answer

Great question Calvin.

No matter how incredible your services are, you are just not going to be everyone's cup of tea. And if you’re unclear about who your client is, you will end up being all things to all people which isn’t a good strategy for attracting your ideal client.

The clearer you are on what you are looking for the easier it is to actually get it.

The first thing to determine is your target market. What do I mean by determining your target market? If you can identify the problem that you specifically resolve for clients, you will see that your service is really designed for one specific person you can help the most.

If you can define what that person looks like, it becomes increasingly easier to find that individual. Where you find that individual, you will find others that want exactly what you are offering.

Ask yourself:

  • What is my unique selling proposition? Why should a person listen to me? What problem do I specifically solve?
  • Who is my client? Really focus on that demographic by getting clear on who you can help.

When you discover who this person is, the next piece is where are they?

You don’t have to cast a big net if you know exactly where that one fish is that you are looking for.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David.

I've heard your teachings on the importance of surrounding yourself with like-minded people. My challenge is that I can't seem to find any like-minded people where I live. Any suggestions for how I can build a community of support, when I feel like I'm on an island?

Neagle Code Answer

Great question! It is very important to your growth that you surround yourself with people that will support you and encourage you as you continue to grow.

Let me start by saying that geography has little to do with this situation. You can be just as alone in a big city as you can be on an island. Surrounding yourself with people that support you shouldn’t be limited to your current city.

You say that you aren’t able to find these people. I would like you to take a moment and look at what you are currently doing.

  • Are you still going to the same social events you have always gone to?
  • Frequenting the same bars, restaurants, sporting events, gyms, etc…?
  • How much time are you spending with your “old” friends?
  • Do you still shop at the same stores, maybe even still use coupons?

If you are still hanging out in the same old places with the same old people, you will not be able to see new people.

Let go of those old habits and create new experiences in your life. Begin to treat yourself differently by up leveling your experiences. Go to new restaurants, shop at new stores, join a different gym and most importantly – talk to people you meet in these places.

Another great place to meet these people is to go to seminars and conferences where other people who share your same interests gather.

Remember that if you have the desire to meet like-minded people, they already exist and you simply have to be visible.

David, I have really loved you Art of Success Program. I'm experiencing amazing breakthroughs in my life because of it. My question for you relates to my indecisiveness. I'm great at seeing opportunities, but how do I know which opportunities to take? I don't want to be steered off course, and yet, I want to make sure I'm leaving no stone unturned.

Thanks!

Neagle Code Answer

Hi Mike.

Congratulations on creating your amazing breakthroughs and thanks for asking this question!

Making quick decisions is a trait shared by all successful people.

That means it's important that you learn how to recognize which opportunities to take advantage of and which to say no to quickly and with confidence.

Fortunately, I have a solution for you.

It is a system that is simple to use and works for me and thousands of my clients.

It's a series of four questions to ask yourself about every opportunity.

1. Is this something I want to be, do or have?

2. Is being, doing or having this taking me closer to my goal?

3. Is being, doing or having this in alignment with Universal Law (more life to all)?

4. Does being, doing or having this violate the rights of others (does it take away someone else's right to choose)?

You are looking for three yeses and one no — in that order.

Using these questions consistently will keep you on course!

Will they see me as an expert?

Neagle Code Question

Hi David!

How do I create credibility for myself when I’m just getting started, in my business? I do not have a list and I have no clients to do testimonials or social history for proof that I can do what I say I can do.

Thank You!

Neagle Code Answer

Thank you for your question. Many people get stuck right here, thinking they have to build credibility, secure testimonials and build a website before they can ever begin.

So here’s the real question, are the people who need you finding you? And when they do, do they see you as an expert or just a friendly peer?

By posturing and positioning your actions, thinking, and energy all to match your expertise, people will see you in that way and want to buy your services.

How do you position yourself as an expert and get your message out?

A great way to do this is by sponsoring and speaking at events that compliment your services. By aligning yourself with event hosts, you hold instant expert status, and if you get to speak from the stage and share your message, you’ll have access to an audience ready to hear from you.

While events can give you the platform, what really enrolls clients is a sales conversation where you ask questions that other people have never asked before.

You don’t need to tell them how much you know or about your raving testimonials or how wonderful your product or service is.

Your confidence in your ability to help them gets transferred TO them, and then they know you can help them.

You don’t sell people… people sell themselves when they realize what they need to do about their problem; which ultimately results in them purchasing your expertise to help solve it!

What about business-personal balance?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions
for Life”
comes from Marna.

Neagle Code Question

David, I am really struggling to find some kind of balance between business and personal. I’m building my business and my boyfriend keeps telling me that I’m working too hard. He’s constantly asking me to quit working and pay attention to him.

I’m really torn between doing everything I can to build a successful business and doing everything to build a successful relationship. Is there a balance, and if there is, how can I find it?

Thanks!

Neagle Code Answer

Thank you for asking this important question. Finding balance can often feel like a high-wire act! Personal relationships can impact your business and vice versa, especially if a relationship is not founded on complimentary or mutually shared values.

It sounds like you and your boyfriend don’t value the same things. This in turn can create a conflict rather than a balance issue.

When someone is asking you to deny your desire to grow (so they can be happy) and to choose between them or your business, ask yourself the following questions:

Why have I attracted this?

What is this here to teach me?

What are the emotions and thoughts that are coming up around this for me?

The truth is, love means total acceptance, and if your boyfriend is not totally accepting of your desires, it may be toxic.

You’re feeling out-of-balance because you are feeling torn to choose and you shouldn’t have to choose.

When you align yourself with values that show you how you can, instead of the all reasons for why you can’t, you will continue on your fast track to growth, and nothing will stop you.

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I love your message and your work! My question is around finding the right clients.

I go to networking meetings and I market myself on line, but there is something wrong…I can’t seem to find the right people to talk to about my services. I’m not sure if it’s my branding, my message or how I introduce myself. Is there a “rule of thumb” to help me get clear on what may be “off”?

Neagle Code Answer

Thank you for your great question!

I love this question because it is an opportunity for you to really look at what you offer and define that one specific person that can use your product or service. When you define that person it becomes easier to find that individual.

The first thing to understand is that clarity is key.

The clearer you are on who it is that you are looking for (your target market), the easier it is to put the puzzle pieces together (where to go to meet these people, networking, marketing) so that you can actually find them.

When I say clarity here, I mean clarity like a whistle only a dog can hear. It is remarkable how that kind of clarity will totally attract that person when you couldn't see them before.

The first question you have to ask yourself is:

What are the explicit facts about my target market?

Are they male or female? Age? Are they married? Divorced? Do they have children? Where do they live? What kind of car do they drive? What is their favorite TV show? Do they exercise? What are their hobbies? What is the biggest purchase they have made? What do they want to change in their life right now?

Answer this from the place of the ONE potential client you can help the MOST.

The next question you have to ask yourself is :

What are the implicit nuances about this person?

What does she think and feel? What does she see, hear, say out loud and do in her day-to-day life? What is most painful to her? What is her biggest win? What is her buying mentality towards your product or service?

You need to be able to determine the readiness and willingness of this person to actually buy what you are selling at the level that you are asking.

I encourage you to do these exercises. By doing them, you will begin to have clarity and you will become like the whistle only dogs can hear.

You will not only find the right clients but the clients whom you love to work with!

How should I market this?

This week's question from my portal “The Neagle Code: Directions
for Life”
comes from Katrin Huber.

Neagle Code Question

Dear David,

I am working with children and I am wondering how I should market this service. Should I go for the help I provide for the parents (more peace at home, being able to be proud of their child..) or should I speak about how my service helps the children (better grades, higher self esteem, less fear…)?

Your Compassionate Conversion Chart is a great tool and helps me a lot but unfortunately not with this issue 🙂

Neagle Code Answer

Hello and thanks for this question!

To begin, a better question to ask is what specific problem are you going to solve?

I suggest you address the biggest problem that offers the most amount of pain and frustration to the parent.

In this case, the parent is the decision maker and has the ability to purchase your help, therefore you should be marketing and selling to the parent.

But if the parent doesn’t sense the URGENCY around resolving the problem, chances are they won’t purchase your service.

The Compassionate Conversion Flow Chart solves this by leading you to ask: What will happen if this problem doesn’t change?

In other words, if I have a problem with my tooth and don’t know how to fix it, the reason I don’t know how to fix my tooth is that there is something about it that I don’t understand. If I’m going to get it fixed, I have to go to someone who understands and has the expertise to fix it. The pain associated with my tooth ache also creates the sense of urgency to find the solution immediately.

The Compassionate Conversion Flow Chart can totally change the outcome of how you conduct sales. By identifying the specific problem you solve for the child and parent, you can leverage the questions in the chart to guide them through the series of strategic questions that bring order and clarity in their mind to help them understand what they really need; which then empowers them to make a decision.

By helping your clients SEE the problem YOU UNIQUELY SOLVE and then tapping into a sense of urgency for them to make a change, you get the privilege of helping them with the solution; which is ultimately what sales is all about!

Neagle Code Question

Hi David,

I've been in PR & Marketing which is really sales and have come to loathe this profession. How do I turn around the experience of loathing sales to loving it?

Neagle Code Answer

Thank you for the great question!

Hating sales… I hear this a lot when I am coaching or teaching on the topic. People will tell me all the things they love to do in their business and say they hate sales.

You are correct that no matter what your product or service, you are in the business of sales. Sales is the only thing that causes money to move, and it must be happening everyday in your business.

In order to love sales you must understand what sales is and the sales process itself and then integrate these into your business.

Earlier in my career I struggled with the idea of sales for a long time even though I was good at it. In my mind I needed to justify that sales was ethically moral. I did a lot of studying, but I was stuck. I even remember thinking that if I didn’t figure this out I would have to give up my business and go back to work. What was interesting to me is that if I went back to work, I would be going to work for a company that sells stuff.

My mentor said to me something that I have kept with me.

Sales is something you do for someone, not something you do to someone.

When you come from a place of doing something FOR someone instead of TO someone, the whole energy around it shifts. Now it doesn’t feel like a necessary evil that you have to do to someone to make money but actually something you are doing for someone.

Start by saying before every sales call “How can I help this person?”

Can you feel the difference?

Is helping someone something you loathe or something you love to do?

The sales process is a communication process between two people. In this conversation it is your job to bring order to their confused mind to empower them to make a new choice.

Again, it all comes back to, “How can I help this person?”

I have actually developed a program that will support you in changing how you feel about sales.

In my Compassionate Conversion Flow Chart I give you step-by-step instructions to help get someone all the way through this process by asking questions that get them to a place of clarity, so they can make a decision based on what they really want.

If you begin to come from a place of sales being something you do for someone and if you follow the Compassionate Conversion Flow Chart, you that you will be well on your way to loving sales.
